While I agree with you mostly about self-identification, January 6th, 1944 entry has an account of her kissing her friend and touching her breasts. At the very least, Anne Frank was experimental with her sexuality, which is common at her age.

okay! let's talk! I was a huge ww2 buff all through middle school so I'm really interested in this stuff. the january 6th passage, for the interested: 

"Once when I was spending the night at Jacque's, I could no longer restrain my curiosity about her body, which she'd always hidden from me and which I'd never seen. I asked her whether, as proof of our friendship, we could touch each other's breasts. Jacque refused. I also had a terrible desire to kiss her, which I did. Every time I see a female nude, such as the Venus in my art history book, I go into ecstasy. Sometimes I find them so exquisite I have to struggle to hold back my tears. If only I had a girlfriend!"

there's no way to argue that this isn't a representation of attraction to other women. i mean, it's very clearly stated in the text. but that doesn't mean she is bisexual, or even specifically sexually attracted to women. body exploration and fascination is very common among prepubescents and those just beginning puberty, which isn't necessarily indicative of sexual orientation (sudden flashbacks to middle school slumber parties). a handful of sentences about fascination with the female body are not equal to a declaration of sexual preference. and if anne was sexually attracted to women, the argument can be made that perhaps she was exclusively sexually attracted to women. her only explicit romantic attraction to men in her diary revolves around peter, which is more of an unhealthy infatuation caused by the circumstances of them being locked in an attic together. point being, trying to put anne frank in one box or another involves a lot more speculation than i or any serious academic should be comfortable with.

the "definitive" edition was edited slightly for phrasing/grammar/spelling, which probably didn't have much effect on meaning, but certain conspiracy theorists say that perhaps only part of the documents were willed to the anne frank foundation after otto's frank's death, or that perhaps chunks of anne's diary were not recovered or were even destroyed by her. the definitive edition uses as its main text the version of the diary "edited" by anne shortly before she was to leave the attic, this version revising things she had written around two years before. so it's really difficult to say how "definitive" the definitive edition really is, and of course everything was "edited" in anne's mind before it ever went on paper. one of the strengths of the definitive edition is that we get to see how anne's opinions and beliefs changed over time, how she goes back to contradict and correct herself. and who knows how anne's sexuality would have changed had she lived a month or year longer. thank you for the points though, they're totally valid & appreciated! discussion about queerness through history is super important! personally, i think it's very likely that anne would come to identify (even if only privately) as bisexual if she had been allowed to fully mature, but as I said, speculation isn't really relevant here.

tl;dr assigning identities to the dead is fraught with difficulty and unless someone explicitly identifies as being attracted to different genders, calling them bisexual is inaccurate. we shouldn't be calling anne straight or queer, as she never defined that for herself.

Who do you think does better business, Brain's family's ice cream shop, or the Sugar Bowl?

i wanna say the sugar bowl because it seems like it's been around longer and the kids seem to go there more often. i'm sure the powers family does great ice cream business but y'know. the sugar bowl is an elwood city icon!
