Last week, two students from IdeaBase and Glyphix worked together to create a mailer for Hudson Montessori School's Annual fund. The client requested illustration be used throughout the piece, so this week Alicia Jordan has shared her process below on creating this imagery.
"This was a really exciting project to work on because the subject matter for the illustrations wasn't specified, giving us the freedom to create a fitting theme for the cause. In starting this project, I sat down with my co-designer Shelby Muter from IdeaBase, and we flipped through printed materials that Hudson Montessori had used in the past. We quickly noticed their emphasis on the journey of learning, and the thrill of discovery. This became the basis for our concept, and it was my job to create imagery that described the adventure of learning.
Because this piece was a call for donations, I felt it necessary to use deeply saturated imagery that emphasized the lush learning environment that Hudson Montessori offers. I also wanted to feature the tools necessary for exploration, to emphasize the impact of donations. When looking at their logo, which utilizes geometric shapes, I felt that the style should stay fairly simplistic to maintain a child-friendly feel.
With these goals in mind, I searched for inspiration to help me achieve the look I wanted. The imagery that struck me was the work of Illustrator Maike Plenzke. I looked at her work often while creating the illustrations for Hudson Montessori, wanting to emulate her simplified shapes while also using rich color and texture.
I created these images completely in Photoshop, utilizing a mixture of the standard dry and wet media brushes that come with the program. I also used a Wacom Bamboo tablet. Wacom tablets allow precise, pressure-sensitive control over the application of color, which allowed me to blend the textured brushes effectively while emulating a more traditional feel. I would recommend one to anyone interested in digital illustration."
