Sans Serif Prints by Daniel Barkle
“I have designed a collection of typography posters, devoted to a selection of notorious Sans Serif typefaces that have heavily influenced me since I began designing. My recent trip to the ‘Bauhaus Archiv’ in Berlin inspired me to explore the form of typefaces and to research the history of typographers.”
Daniel Barkle is a graduate of Graphic Communication from Bath Spa University. Currently he works as a junior graphic designer at Dyson. He enjoys all areas of design, particularly typography, animation and print. The one thing he can say about himself is that he has an appetite for creating honest, innovative design - loving everything about the career path he has chosen to go into and wanting to make a great impact wherever he may be.

We’re 40, y’all!
Spitballing. Because reasons.
Being a designer is awesome. We get to make cool stuff in Photoshop and get paid for it. I think it's pretty high on the list of cool ways to make a living. That being said, there are s…

As designers, we often get caught up in; well, design. Or at least I have. I went through a period of many amazon purchases buying the most popular books on designers, color, type, grids, icons, and design history. Sometimes these help, but sometimes it’s most beneficial to simply look at art. Look outside, take a walk, admire people, experience the weather, listen to music, read poetry, and just cultivate your brain where it wants to be cultivated- with creativity (creativity in any form, location, medium)! One of my favorite lines of books, that is full of inspiration for design, or just life in general, is called StoryPeople, by Brian Andreas. StoryPeople are small interpretive stories that each belong to someone, anyone. One book particularly of his that has really stood out to me, which is called Strange Dreams.
Brian Andreas has published books of his short stories and drawings. His abstract and almost child-like style of illustration is paired with very thought-provoking words. The stories range from serious to hilarious, inspiring to irrelevant, and really focus on the little pieces of magic that make up ordinary days. Strange Dreams is a collection of his writings that answer the question that many fans write to him wondering about where his dreams come from- by which he answers in this book through strange dreams. Addressing where StoryPeople comes from, in the beginning of the book he states “In the end, I don’t know if this helps you with the fact. I’m not very good with facts. I only know what’s true…”
“We grow a lot faster than trees, he said, so we miss a lot of stuff.”
-Brian Andreas

The Little Type Book is a side project seniors Ruby Kelly and Alli Frasier are putting together for VCD students. The final piece will be a handcrafted zine full of handcrafted type produced by students and faculty in the VCD program. The more participants the better, so if you're interested in submitting here's what you have to do: • hand render your favorite motivational quote • design within 5" x 3.5" and scan in your work • convert to grayscale and set the resolution to 300 ppi • submit to [email protected] or [email protected] by December 5, 2014 To make as many books as possible to give out to students, free of cost, there is a $5 printing fee per submission. All participants are guaranteed a copy of the final book! Email Ruby or Alli with any questions.
Stay tuned for some big new things in the next few weeks... Including an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the enigmatic Josh Kruszynski.

Andrew Jeffrey Wright's "Labs with Abs" is what ROUGHS is all about
Last Wednesday, Glyphix was visited by Ken Hejduk and Roger Frank of Little Jacket.
Ken and Roger talked us through Little Jacket's comprehensive process of branding, which involves including the client in a way that facilitates their needs and drawing out exactly what sort of personality their brand is all about.
The process is not always without failures, but with a willingness to try new things and the courage to try harder, Little Jacket's branding process has been hugely successful in helping clients connect to people "in a human way."
Friends, family, and followers! Don't forget to stop by the Glyphix studio this Saturday from 3pm to 7pm for our first ever VCD Alumni and Student Open House. Take a tour of the space, meet our staff, and check out some past and present work. Plus snacks, photo booth fun, and more! Find out more here.
