The Elvish Industrial Revolution (or why no one should invite Sauron to Valinor)
Inspired by Gorthauro Estel, the main reason to never ever take Sauron to Valinor:
Revenge will be had by Sauron starting an elvish industrial revolution. This is a win-win situation for Sauron because it’s non-evil, appears as “helping” the children (by giving them power over the elements), yet undermines the need for the elves to be beholden to the Valar (see Numenor). Once it gets going, it won’t be Sauron vs the Valar, it will be the elves vs the Valar. Technology and convince are powerful draws that are hard to give up. And it will look something like this:
Yavanna: Look at this horrible tree-killing device *points to chain saw*! He’s evil I tell you! AND DON’T START ME ON STRIP MINING!
Aule: Sauron, strip mining is impressively efficient, but it’s driving Yavanna mad. Please stop.
Oh. My. Eru. Look at that power-tool. *salivating* MY FORMER APPRENTICE IS A GENIUS!
Ulmo: they’re damming up my rivers for energy! That’s rude! And they’re going to burn themselves on all those “steam engines”.
Orome: Animals are getting scared off by all this noise! You’re ruining my hunting!
Manwe: Electricity? Children shouldn’t be playing with lighting bolts, miniature or otherwise! Sauron!
