every time joel blinks, he just flickers/glitches out of existence. so when he closes his eyes, he basically vanishes completely.

adding to this, the more he squints his eyes, the more transparent he gets. and the wider his eyes open (often when he just stares at people), he becomes more vibrant, in like an extremely unsettling way. and probably glitches if he keeps them open for too long.
