Goddess Diamond becomes the 14th trans person killed in the U.S. this year
On June 9, 20-year-old trans woman Goddess Diamond became the fourteenth transgender person killed in the United States in 2016 when her body was found in a burning car in New Orleans, reported Autostraddle on Tuesday. Many believe the timing of her death is not merely a coincidence.
A body found in the passenger seat of a burned-out vehicle early Sunday (June 5) in the Pines Village area was that of a 20-year-old homicide victim, according to the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office. Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Rouse on Friday said [redacted] Diamond died of blunt force trauma. New Orleans police said Sunday firefighters were called around 4:20 a.m. to put out a car fire in Pines Village in New Orleans East when they discovered the body. The New Orleans Fire Department said then the vehicle was parked on the side of the road near in the intersection of Flite Court and Airway Street. The vehicle's interior was "fully involved" in flames by the time firefighters arrived. Diamond's mother Antionette Diamond told The Advocate she did not know who would have wanted to harm her son. He had been working for the last year at Wal-Mart in New Orleans East after having spent many years in Georgia following Hurricane Katrina, she told the newspaper. NOPD Homicide Det. Andrew Waldron is the lead investigator on the case. Department spokesman Tyler Gamble said the investigation is in early stages and no additional information was available.
