Every Tribe & Tongue
As is likely no surprise by now, I love the Olympics. When I say "I love the Olympics", I mean that I will likely put the rest of the world on pause, get almost nothing productive done, and pretty much even plan my meals out around where they might be airing Olympic coverage. Ask my mom and bestie, and they will confirm that this is no exaggeration.
Now, if I were a sports fan in general, this would seem like just an average day, and some may even say I would need help for my obsession. But, the odd thing is... honestly, Olympics are pretty much the only sports I absolutely love. Come time for Olympics, and you are likely to suddenly start seeing sports comments on my news feed, and hear cheering and hooting coming from our house.
So, why of all sports, of all times of year, do I pick just the Olympics?.... there are three main reasons I love the Olympics more than any other sport, or season of sports. Firstly, like a great holiday meal... when you only see these sports roughly once every 4 years, it makes them all seem fresh and exciting. They all seem new and unusual, and you can't get tired of them. Secondly, I learn a lot about new places, cultures, and sports with each Olympics (for instance: thanks to Rio Olympics, I learned that pink dolphins swim the same water as piranha... and they actually eat piranha!!!).
But what I really love about the Olympics, for 2 weeks (approx.) I feel like I get to see a tiny worldly version of what heaven could be like. People from all tribes and tongue converge in one place and actually get along. Politics are put aside (although, yes.. I do know Olympics have some of their own politics, but still...), and rival countries are required to lay down their issues with one another, look each other in the face, and shake hands. When the whole world right now seems to be at odds, it is my little glimpse at peace. It's my little tiny taste of biblical brotherhood. Sure, they are competing, and they want to be the best. There will be sore losers, and lousy winners, and there are some giant differences that won't get resolved. But, it's amazing to see some of these people from all walks of life in the opening ceremony all celebrating this amazing chance together. And even more amazing when you see competing countries that sometimes don't get along, battle out in their competition, yet in the end they have a total look of respect for one another.Does this mean I think all Olympians are perfect? or that I think the Olympics are perfect?... No.. not at all. This is a competition filled will humans. Many of them think they are almost gods. Nothing can be perfect in those hands. But, I love to take 2 weeks out and just breathe, and see that even in our crazy mixed up, extremely scary times. There is still a pocket of hope somewhere. And while I'm at it.... enjoy the fun shows, because it doesn't hurt that it's fun to watch too ;D.
