For the spiritual master Ben Sira, the wisdom had a deep meaning, and not only theoretical but also practical; for this famous author of the Bible, wisdom was more than a set of simple practical advice to achieve wellness and good living as shown in the Book of Proverbs. This is why Ben Sira taught how the eternal wisdom of God became the "daughter of man," that is, she manifested herself and was personified in the most notable men in the history of the people of Israel. And among the list of notable men was the great King David. The First Book of Samuel tells of the rise of young David, the son of Jesse, as king of Israel. And about this Ben Sira expressed: "Just as the fat of the sacred offerings is set apart, so DAVID was chosen out of all Israel" Ben Sira 47:2. When David was chosen by the prophet Samuel to be anointed king, David, being the last of his brothers, was separated from them and the rest of his nation as the sacred is separated from the mundane, Ben Sira taught because God had assigned him a mission. And this is so because God blesses the pure in heart, David was full of the spirit and performed incredible feats. And Ben Sira added that David demonstrated his devotion to God, like a man of good heart: "With his every deed he offered thanks to God Most High, in words of praise. With his whole heart he loved his Maker" Ben Sira 47:8. Finally, Ben Sira concluded his story about David by recounting how the Lord blessed him: "The LORD forgave him his sins and exalted his strength forever; he conferred on him the rights of royalty and established his throne in Israel" Ben Sira 47:11.

The Psalm 35 is a prayer for help, and also a song that recounts the sufferings of a God-fearing person persecuted by his enemies. In a certain sense, Psalm 35 is the logical continuation of Psalm 1, the Psalm of the Two Ways. The Book of Psalms, like all the sapiential books, teaches that there are two mentalities or two discernments, and as a consequence two paths, righteousness and sin. And this has as a practical result, the opposition between those who live according to the law of God and those who do not. This Psalm may have been written by King David, who probably expressed his personal experiences in the song, the betrayal of King Saul and his son Absalom; in a world subjected to sin and where oppression and deception prevail, the righteous men are always tested. Psalm 35 begins with these words, pleading God for his spiritual protection: "Contend, LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. Take up shield and armor; arise and come to my aid. Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to me, ´I am your salvation.´" Psalm 35:1-3. Then the author of the Psalm continued with his prayer and requested the fulfillment of the divine laws, good and evil always return to those who practice it: "May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, ´The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant.´" Psalm 35:26-27. Finally, the Psalm concludes with the promise to worship God every day after the fulfillment of divine blessings: "My tongue will proclaim your righteousness, your praises all day long" Psalm 35:28.

The Book of Job is a book that to some extent reflects the history of the people of Israel. What can men think when God in the face of suffering and injustice remains silent? The Bible does not tell us where Job was from, or when he was born, but what it does tell us is that Job was a devoted man of God, and that he cared to please him in everything he did. But at one point in his life, the beatitude left him and bad things began to happen to him. And about this theme, the great sages in other books of the Bible left us with an important thought, being good does not mean that bad things do not have to happen to you; because in life there is a time for everything, for the good and for the bad things. But Job in his sadness did not understand this thought of the sages in the Bible because dominated by his selfishness he tried to become a judge of God. Job had lost something very important virtue, the equanimity. But with the development of the book, Job met some friends who, aware of his situation, came to comfort him. His friends were Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. And it was there that in one of the speeches with his friends, Job had to admit the inability of man to understand the mysteries of God. God is almighty and the wisdom itself and man with his reason can only access this infinite wisdom in a limited way; in this way Job expressed this truth: "God is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has resisted Him and prospered? He moves mountains without their knowing it and overturns them in his anger. He shakes the earth from its place and makes its pillars tremble. He speaks to the sun and it does not shine; he seals off the light of the stars. He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea. He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south. He performs wonders, that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted" Job 9:4-10. For this reason, Job, with his example, taught us that when bad things happen to good people, what remains is perseverance and that humility of spirit to cope with misfortune.

Isaiah 40 (part 2)

God is loving, steadfast, and merciful. We must acknowledge that God is also awesome (not the cool kind of awesome, although He's cool too lol). And this part of the chapter talks mostly about His awesomeness. Although this chapter has a lot to do with awesomeness and power and stuff, it's funny how verse 11 talks about His gentleness. That is an interesting and important thing to note as will be seen in later verses. And then we go onto the awesomeness... Verse 12 describes God's ginormous character. Verse 13-14 describe His mind. No one can possibly counsel Him in any way (especially none of His creation). He is the founder of justice. Verse 15 describes His powerful reign and sovereignty (and the insignificance of any seemingly powerful nation). Verse 16 describes His holiness and is one of those verses that basically says it's not the sacrifice itself that God wants/needs. Verse 17 basically equals verse 15. Verses 18-20 describe the foolishness in comparing the Creator with something his creation created. (Now that really is dumb yet we do it all the time...) Verse 21 is pretty interesting. I was reading through it and thinking it was kind of insignificant. But it's starting to sound like this verse is saying that these characteristics have been laid out and revealed since the beginning of creation. There seems to be a link to this verse and Romans 1:18-23 (COOL). Verses 22-23 are more about His hugeness and infinite difference in power between Him and people. Verse 24 talks about the fragility of man and is very akin to verse 7 of this chapter. Verse 26 describes God's knowledge over all His creation. This verse is more focused on the trillions of celestial bodies in the universe. To a God who is infinite, surely numbering these guys and calling them by name is a breeze. But to me... a trillion is a big number... Lol how do you even think of a million names? Verse 27 is questioning those who might have the notion of hiding something from God who is omnipresent. Verses 28-31... Famous verses. As powerful as El Shaddai is, it's extremely comforting to know that He doesn't use this power to completely obliterate everything with His left pinky toe. We must remember verse 11. God is like a shepherd who gathers lambs in his arms. This very same God is one who "gives power to the faint." This very same God gives His everlasting strength to a people who will eventually become weary and exhausted to the point where they are able to run/walk without wearing out. Truly only one who is everlasting and steadfast can do this. Verse 25 wraps it up pretty nicely.
