Ratchet & Clank: Going Comando [PS2] Review
Ratchet & Clank: Going Comando is the sequel to the first Ratchet and Clank, release about a year after in 2003. The game takes ratchet to a new galaxy with new weapons, characters, worlds, and gameplay! it's everything you loved about the first game, but upgraded! lets get to it!
This game plays out exactly like the first game [which is great!], but has much more refined touches to it. like, for instance, the major fault in the first game: AIMING! yes, its improved! a strafe system has been brough in! all you do is press in L2 or R2 and ratchet automatically hooks into strafe mode. this makes aiming 1000000000X easier, and alows ratchet to do some kool flipping evasive manuevers. another good thing is that insomniac made hard work to not fix anything that wasnt broken, so the worlds all still look beautiful in their own. this game does take place in a seperate galaxy, so there arent any returning planets from the last game though. but the major characters you loved are still there and are back! [ratchet even now wears kool suits of armor rather then running around topless like before. and this is actually pretty kool. the newer the set of armor you get, the less damage inflicted on each hit. SPEAKING OF! health is now raised! you start out with 4, but as you progress through the game it continues to go up even higher. [up to 100 i beleive] for the most part, that works like this: as you kill an enemy he gives you XP. collect enough XP and you automatically gain another thing of health. its another great improvement.
weapons were the stars of the first game, and theyre back. twice the size even [no not literally]. this game features even more weapons than the last, and even some returning favorites from the last game which you can get for free if you bought them in the previous game and have that information on your memory card. but here's whats even better. the new weapons UPGRADE! in the same XP method for gainign health, you upgrade weapons that way aswell. you kill an enemy with a weapon, you get XP for that weapon. when you upgrade a weapon, more than performance is enhanced, the weapon takes on a whole new look. the only downside is some of the weapons feel a tiny bit familiar, but when you can upgrade them into something else, who cares?
obviously, with bigger weapons, the gameplay action has to get reved up a bit and it does! the focus here becomes less platforming and more shooting, and it works wonders. its incredibly fun to where you wont want to stop. this also leads to replay value, and ratchets still got it. in almost every way as in the first, if not more, theres more than enough reason to play through again. especially the fact that you can carry all your upgraded weapons and armor into a new game. this game, like the first [which wasnt so successfull in this area] has alot of varried gameplay. all and all its an improvement, but theres still stuff that seem we could do without. the giant clank fights are fun, but become an anoyance as they take time and patience. the hover board races have been upgraded to hover bike races, and though these are much more fun and a whole lot easier, they seem a bit unnesesary, but still, its fun to do a little different. what doesnt work are the space missions. in a similar starfox style, you fend off waves of ships. its kool at first but later it becomes a little more challenging and the game was probably better off without them. what does work are the gladiator styled arenas. now these are fun! you pited in an area to fight off waves of enemies for rewards and prizes, anlong with a couple extra boss fights. also, these mini planet missions where the world youre on litterally curves under your feat. its very fun and interesting. if you were a fan of the first games clank missions, well theyre back and better but they come far to unfrequent, you tend to forget about them.
story is also tons better here. theres are 2 big twist you find that arent expected out of a game like this, so the story is a thumbs up. also it seems alot longer than the first game and alot more happens, and its just a blast to play through. pick up this game wether you played the first or not, cause you'll love it no matter what. this games scores itself a 9 out of 10. excelent.
