Everyday Sexism and why you MUST read it.
It’s been sitting on my bedside table for a long time; it screamed ‘READ ME’ but I lacked the courage of facing the horrendous sexism women have and are facing. The sexism I have to deal with now and in the future; as well as young girls suffering from it too. Another future female generation that will suffer. I watch the girls at the guide unit I volunteer at, and I witness from the ages of ten and even before that, sexism is chipping away at the shells they saw as invincible when they were younger. The way the patriarchy forces them against one another, how they feel they need to dress: the heartbreaking comments they are gradually hearing. You can see the physical difference sexism has made between girls of 10 years and girls aged only around 12.
Laura Bates wrote a book in 2014, and it has changed feminism. Feminism is no longer about the restriction women faced, enforced by men; but the blatant harassment, abuse and assault that prevents women from achieving equality. NEARLY 70% OF FEMALE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS HAVE BEEN HARASSED. That made my heart stop when I read it. It makes harassment feel almost inevitable when I progress with my life. 7 out of 10. The numbers swirl. So sizeable it’s incomprehensible to anything I have faced in the short 15 years of my life.
Everyday Sexism has awoken a fire in me. A fire to fight for people even more so; I would not be able to live with myself knowing I hadn’t done enough to make a significant difference to the lives of those who face the worst. Sexism is yet another issue that can no longer be left, and only worked on in small chunks. It’s time to take down the whole system of sexism. And I hope if you read Everyday Sexism it will alight a similar fire in your soul, like it did mine, so you and I can fight for justice together.
Love,
Anna
