Startled, The Inspector hopped, well hovered, back a bit alarmed.

"Oh, hello? I didn't expect any bots to-... Oh. Never seen your versions before." He scans the two bots. "...'Bug bot variants'? Hm. Okay." He pauses recalling what they said and asked. "No, they haven't really. But I am fine with that, as long as I keep P-03 happy. But, thank you..." He seems shocked at the second question, "No! Why would I? It is what I was created to do. I wouldn't want to disappoint P-03."

Stupid question here: do you have to assign affects on crystals, or do they already have certain effects?

This is 100% a Your Witching May Vary answer.

You will find people who say both ways. Some people can name off energies and properties of crystals, and you can definitely find pages and pages and books upon books of information on crystals and their properties. This is an entire thing. Though I will tell you that this is a New Age thing, not an Ancient Witchcraft thing, even though lots of people will tell you that it’s ancient. It is not. (Which is okay, ‘ancient’ doesn’t have to mean better in the witching world, nor does ‘new’ automatically mean better.) If you want to get super hardcore into crystal energies and stuff, the community you find will probably be more on the “crystals already have certain effects” side. You can definitely find blogs and books on the subject (but I would caution you to use some discernment, because this is where you can run into the “I, a white woman, will teach you to cleanse your chakras!” crowd).

However, a lot of witches who use crystals do assign purpose to their crystals. This is where you’ll run into buzzwords like ‘charge’ and ‘program’ and ‘intent’. This is all Fancy Witch Speak for “tell the thing to do what you want it to do”. With this line of thinking, you can probably assign any effect to any crystal you want to, though in practice you might find otherwise. This will rely a little more on experimentation than on reference material and book-learning. Do you have a super-pointy amethyst crystal that you feel has good banishing power because you could throw it and take a mofo out? Then that is a good banishing crystal. Does your onyx just have a super chill vibe that makes you feel like the whole room has been calmed when you have this crystal nearby? Cool, then that’s a calming crystal. The downside of this is that you’re more likely to run into the “making stuff up for the aesthetic” crowd. (Again, which is okay to do things for the aesthetic, you’re again just going to have to use your discernment to figure out what information is reliable for your purposes.)

There ARE, however, definite PHYSICAL properties of crystals that you should absolutely look up if you’re going to work with them. Lots of crystals are toxic if placed in water and some with skin contact (and some crystals are just fancy names for asbestos???). So you should ABSOLUTELY check into the scientific properties of crystals so you know about any safety issues.

(Also, not a crystal, but since it’s crystal-adjacent: be careful with those himalayan salt lamps/rocks/blocks/candle holders because your pets may want to lick them and can get salt poisoning which is VERY VERY VERY BAD, so keep those things away from your fur babies.)
