Keep chemicals far away from fish. Never use chemicals like Windex to clean the tank glass. Paint fumes and air fresheners can get into the water and poison your fish. Even lotion or perfume on your hands can hurt your fish. Use unperfumed soap before handling your fish and equipment.

Don’t trust pet store employees. They’re usually not very knowledgeable and just want to sell you something. Even fish store employees can be as ignorant about goldfish as the average person. Always seek second and third opinions and advice from goldfish experts.

Stay away from cure-alls like API General Cure and Seachem ParaGuard when treating for parasites and/or mild infections. They contain strong medicines that are harsh on fish kidneys and they aren’t usually necessary.
