I was either going to make THIS joke, or some form of me looking at the interior of the Shangri-La Egg and saying "Huh, I thought this was supposed to be dystopian future Japan, not dystopian future Saudi Arabia." ...but this seemed like it'd be a lot more fun to draw.

Digimon Beatbreak Episode 9 Review - The Price For Paradise

We’re not even in the double digits in terms of episode count yet, and this is already the darkest, most twisted episode by far. I’m really impressed with the writing! Utopia? More like dystopia… Like, is this really worth trying to go back to utopia for? Is utopia—or the perfect, ideal life—really that worth it? It really makes you think a lot.

I honestly love the world building regarding Shangri-La Egg. It’s like it’s own world inside. It gives off an eerie vibe due to the people living their striving to always be perfect and ideal. They are always on their Sapotama as well and heavily rely on it. I can see why the villains of this two-parter try to strive to return, despite the father, Sunny, having a criminal record. The way Reina was surprised that people who live in utopia still work despite living in luxury is what I felt too. However, it does make sense that they would work because the perfection itself is also a competition. One false move and everything crumbles faster than eggs against a hard surface.

Digimon are considered the ultimate “sin” in paradise. Once a person gives birth to a Digimon, they’re exiled. Makoto being from a wealthy upbringing was actually hinted upon from his appearance to his mannerisms; the opening even has Makoto shown in an ornate room in the background. I didn’t know that the Kuonji family was basically at the very top of society, seeing how the employees were shocked to see his surname. I do wonder what the cause of Chiropmon’s birth was. If he lived the perfect life, how did his Sapotama give birth? By chance? Was there some sort of circumstance that caused it to hatch? The fact that his backstory was mostly told and not shown was a little frustrating, but I hope it will be shown either in the next episode or in future ones as it seems that his family could play an important role later on.

I think Haruko and Sunny are the vilest villains in the story by far. Though, maybe Sunny is the evilest. Despite his criminal record, which is considered a stain in Shangri-La Egg, he still strives to find a way back into paradise because he envies the Kuonji family. He’s definitely an abusive father because Haruko is only ten years old like Makoto yet she’s already a Cleaner and making her Digimon Shademon do all these heinous acts and she can’t really talk back or have a different opinion on her actions because of her father. In a way, Haruko is pitiful, and a victim of her circumstances. It does make me wonder what part of Shademon is a reflection of her. It seems like a sweet Digimon that got stuck with an unfortunate owner.

The fact that Digimon can be stolen by overriding the previous owner’s e-pulse in their Sapotama is shocking! Then again, there were hints in the beginning that it could be possible due to how Hitomi’s Sapotama got overwritten by Tomoro when he touched it, causing her egg to have his data from food preferences to grades. Does this mean Haruko has a unique e-pulse that could steal Digimon?

There’s a lot of Digimon veterans in this episode. GoldNumemon is voiced by Masami Kikuchi, who has been in almost every Digimon anime except for Appmon. He was Joe in Adventure & 02, Rob in Tamers, Neemon in Frontier and the Adventure reboot, Kurata in Savers, Damemon in Fusion and Ryudamon in Ghost Game. He’s basically a staple in the Digimon franchise. It is a little unfortunate that GoldNumemon’s role is basically to be comic relief and its important diminishes towards the end of the episode where the Yamadas decide to target Chiropmon instead.

Shademon is voiced by Kouki Miyata who has been in Adventure as PicoDevimon, Kumbhiramon in Tamers, and Dracumon in Ghost Game. Some of his non-Digimon roles include Aiichiro Nitori from Free, Chihiro Fujisaki from Danganronpa and Murata from Demon Slayer. It’s interesting how the two focal Digimon are voiced by long-time Digimon veterans.

Haruko is voiced by Hitomi Owada who has been in Ghost Game as Elecmon and other characters. One of her non-Digimon roles include Nia from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The funniest piece of trivia I just found out is that Owada is married to Yohei Azakami, who is Kyo’s voice actor.

Sunny is voiced by Yoshimitsu Shimoyama. This is his first Digimon role. Some of his roles includes Alzack and Cancer from Fairy Tail and Gutsman from Megaman NT Warrior. I honestly found his voice really creepy with how unsettling Sunny is. The voice actor really did a good job.

Why can’t next week come by faster? I can’t wait to see a possible Chiropmon evolution with how the preview played out. I also sense a very emotional episode. I’m prepared but I am also not. Sure is a lot of “tell, don’t show” when it comes to the official profiles of Digimon.

I’m sure we’ll see WitcheIny and Digital World: Iliad someday though (the next Digimon Story game IS about the Olympos XII so not including the Digital World: Iliad wouldn’t be kind of dumb TBH). The Dark Area’s appeared a few times after all.

Tamersona Week Day 1: How did you first meet your partner? Did it go well? How did you find out you were destined for greatness?

Well I was in the school library, unable to go on a field trip with the rest of the class, when I checked on my v-pet. Then it glitched out, seemed like time froze and the next thing I knew I was surrounded by eggs and bugs.

Learning the DigiDump was called Junk Kingdom and had a Queen was the weirdest part of that day but let me tell you-
