I think it would be cool to  have a similar race to gems. Metals! I seen few other ideas like this, but I love to post my head canons on Metals below

-Metals are built with similar tech so they can fuse with gems. However unlike fusions with only gems, Metals don’t create a new being rather meld with the gem and become somewhat a armor- When a gem melds with a meta,l they can take much harder hits depending on the metal. 

- Metals are rare as most of the tech that created them is destroyed. They remaining Metals live on a hidden planet deep within.

- Metals don’t usually like gems and usually butt heads with them-Gold up top is more curious of them as she’s very new.
