Good Covers For Wrong
Bad cognition is protected, reinforced, and nurtured by strong moral values and feelings, especially knee-jerk ones, especially ones that have wide consensus.
Not always. If you're an idiot or toxic about something most people disageee about, people will tell you. People will gladly pick apart your bullshit if you have an unpopular take they don't like, especially if it is strong enough to inconvenience or threaten them. Your brain won't get much positive feedback for that bad cognition.
But the closer you get to consensus, to really hair-trigger intensely righteous feelings, to actually objectively good and important takes, the more bad cognition will be rewarded, ignored, and defended; the easier for harmful cognition to pass as good moral judgement or intuition; the costlier for anyone to point out errors; the harder for an argument against bad cognition to exist that other bad cognition cannot wrongly dismiss as less consistent with the good.
