Kindness where you can
(Written in five minutes, for Derek Hale Appreciation Day. Here's to you, kid. Thanks for never giving up.)
Keep going. Derek learned that from his Alphas. From his mother, his sister, even from Scott McCall. When you lose everything, you keep going. Peter taught him that if you don't give up and don't give in, eventually you'll grow stronger than anything that stands against you--even fire, even madness. You can save yourself, if you can hold on for long enough for your friends to reach you--that he learned from Stiles.
Know your enemy is something he learned from Jennifer. Strike hard he learned from Kate.
He learned loss from everywhere, everyone.
Standing shoulder to shoulder with Chris Argent at Allison's grave, he remembers his father always telling him "Offer kindness where you can, Derek" but he doesn't quite know how. It's been a long time since...well, it's been a long time. He only knows how to do the small things, like bringing wolfsbane to a hunter's grave, like being there at all.
He could tell Argent keep going but he's sure that he already knows this. What do you do when you lose everything, no matter how much you needed to keep it? You keep going.
Still, it's ready on the tip of his tongue when Argent finally speaks.
"How," he asks, "do you keep going?"
It isn't the question Derek was expecting and it takes him a minute to swallow the words in his mouth, to change out the lessons that were taught to him to the one that he learned all on his own, from just himself.
"You believe," he says quietly. "You just believe that there's something good out there for you. You believe that you'll get it, if you keep going. You hope it's sooner rather than later."
Argent makes a small sound. "That works?"
Yes, Derek thinks but all he says is "Only one way to find out."
I'm looking for an Allison icon and I'm getting really sad looking at my beautiful baby's face cause she's so young and happy I just
