I really miss loving Teen Wolf.  Things about how the show went after few seasons made me quit watching.  I really feel the show screwed itself out of some great story-lines and that it messed up some great characters.  I still love the early seasons, I still love the FANDOM.  I will always love Derek and Stiles and Potato-Scott and PETER THE FUCKED-UP PSYCHO GOOD GUY.   I kind of think, now, that fandom made the show better than it actually was in some ways.   So I finally found a clip of the whole ‘Stiles’ first name’ (which you might have read my rant about) and decided I can forgive the show the ‘Mischief’ (which is a cute story, totally) because apparently YES Stiles heard his name said incorrectly and yes, he could have childishly mangled THAT messed-up name into ‘Mischief’.   I still reject the Sheriff’s first name being anything but ‘John’.   This is another case where the show should have taken a note from the fans and pulled a Hikaru out of the bag.

People who had known both of them would have seen it--the Howling Commandos probably would have given him crap for it--but there’s nobody in his life (save a fading Peggy Carter) who knew him, let alone him and Bucky.  How lonely it must be to live in a world of ghosts, to be a ghost yourself but one forced to carry on?

Baze/Chirrut in the Context of Chinese Culture

aka “Look for the Force, and you will find me” and the Giant Middle Finger towards the Chinese Inequalities

So a couple of weeks back, I saw this video of an interview of Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen, in which someone asked them about Baze and Chirrut’s relationship. They said a lot of things, mostly teasing, but the video ended with Donnie smiling and saying, “They’re very good brothers.”

My immediate, visceral reaction is bull-fucking-shit. And a sense of absolute glee because I know he knows that he’s talking bullshit.

I’ve been thinking for the last couple of weeks about why it’s bullshit. This post is the result. It’s pretty long, so: tl;dr Chinese culture is about extremely structured and strict societal relationships, and Baze and Chirrut’s smashes that all into pieces to show how people can be equal and not fit into boxes.

Disclaimer: I grew up in a staunchly Chinese family in a Chinese-majority country and grew up consuming media from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. But I did not grow up in any of those places. My country of origin is pretty damned Westernised. If I get anything wrong, please tell me.

I have brought my tl;dr to a new fandom and I still keep it under a cut.

i want to write an ode in iambic pentameter to chirrut’s expression here because it’s a very specific expression. it’s an expression illustrated on page one of the Handbook of Peak Marriage. i got flashbacks to how my grandparents used to argue after knowing eachother for 60 years. this is the ‘we’ve been having this discussion for decades and never officially settled who’s right and who’s wrong but we both know exactly who’s right and that’s me’ expression. the ‘i’m going to keep looking directly at you while talking about you in the third person to someone else who really wishes they were halfway across the galaxy right now’ face. amazing.

Mieczysław  sounds nothing like ‘mischief’.   It’s Polish.  Try ‘Me-aitch-ah-swaf’ (with the f kind of shading into a v sound).  Stress falls on the ‘ah’ part.   Unless you don’t mean the dark l (which, I don’t know how you wouldn’t)  in which case it sounds even less like mischief.  More like mee-aitch-ah-swaf, with a longer hold on the e and a more pronounced ‘a’ in the aitch.  But the people I’ve known with that name all use the dark l.  I mean, nice try--people are going to stare at that name and be super confused--but anybody who knows enough about the Polish language (or, in Stiles’ case, has a grandfather with that name) knows that the easiest way to shorten it would be ‘Miecz’ (sounds more like ‘me-etch’ and would be easier to misprounounce as ‘mage’ than mischief.
