The lawyer summed up the requirements of the law exactly as Christ did on other occasions (love God, love your neighbour). However, his seeking to justify himself revealed his self-righteous character. The prevailing opinion among scribes and Pharisees was that one’s neighbours were the righteous alone. To them, the wicked were to be hated because they were enemies of God. The truly righteous person’s “hatred” for sin is not a malevolent enmity against individuals, but should be a righteous abhorrence for things not of God. It is also tempered by genuine LOVE and compassion for the sinner. The Pharisees had elevated hostility toward the wicked to the status of a virtue, thereby nullifying the second part of the Great Commandment. Jesus’ answer to this lawyer demolishes the pharisaical excuse for hating one’s enemies. We all have a responsibility to be a neighbour especially to those who are in need. Saying it louder for the people in the back: Your hate is not justified! Love your neighbour!

I was late to my morning commitment today, but for good reason; along my route there was a wire down, hanging onto the road and making it impassable with any amount of safety.
