There are two very effective ways to improve your writing. First is the obvious: write a lot. As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect, and this is certainly true for writing. 

The second might not be so obvious: read a lot. Reading and writing go hand in hand. By reading a wide variety of things, from news stories and literature to poetry and non-fiction, you expand your vocabulary and command of language as well as gain a better sense of what constitutes good and bad writing.

Everyone in the Global Voices community is busy, but make sure that you set aside time to do a little reading now and then, and not simply for GV stories (though that's always encouraged!).

My Writing is a Mine of Diamonds

Writing has to be one of the greatest satisfactions in this world. Post-secondary education conditions us to develop an animosity towards it because not only are we forced to write according to someone else's guidelines and expectations, but we are expected to do so in a limited amount of time. I often debate that this hinders my creative ability and forces me into a box. However, I've learned to embrace different forms of writing. I appreciate the pressure because after all, coal under pressure makes diamonds!
