8 Step to Request Online Reviews
It's probably the easiest way to give customers a choice of review sites (maybe 2-5) so you can diversify.
You can use a review tool like GetFiveStars or Grade.us, which makes it easy to set up the page.
You can easily send customers to the page in a personal request or in an email (or both).
You add another step to the process, as you need to direct customers to a page that in turn directs them to a review site of their choice.
Probably some customer reviews will not end up on the sites you want the most reviews on. Maybe you have enough Facebook reviews, but you want more Google reviews and people keep choosing Facebook. You have to adapt to the range of sites and which ones you prioritize.
Great for gauging customer satisfaction and fixing any issues that might hinder a good review.
It is difficult for the customer to dismiss you
You can easily guide the customer through the assessment process.
It takes a lot of time, although this time is probably well spent.
You may not be calling at the right time. Use online reputation management software to manage reviews.
Sending review request emails automatically can save you a lot of time.
Most review tools make it easy for customers to offer different choices of review sites, allowing you to collect reviews across different websites.
You may be tempted to rely too much on the software to do all the work, without much or any oversight or fine-tuning on your part. Business owners (or their employees) never have the time to ask customers for reviews. They just don't know what to ask, how to ask, or when to ask. You should request a review in person and use the email as a follow-up or reminder.
You'll have to play around with the settings and probably send some ignored requests before you know what works best.
4. Showing an instructional video
Excellent way to provide clear instructions.
You can put it on a review page.
It takes some effort to make a good, clear and short video and you will have to change it if the steps are changed on Google Maps or on another site.
You may not always have the video to hand when you want to guide customers through the review process.
You can set it up quickly as you will likely be using a third-party utility to send the texts.
It is very useful for some customers.
For other customers, the text appears at the wrong time: they are driving or walking
It is often annoying to receive SMS from others than friends or family. It can come across as intrusive.
You cannot include much in the way of instructions in a text.
Any reviews you get probably won't be too detailed.
Chances are they won't help or even look fake.
It may seem impersonal. Click here to get more reviews on yelp
6. Links, buttons or widgets on your website
You don't have to stick your neck out to ask for reviews.
It's easy for people to ignore your link / button / widget
It's easy for people to ignore your link / button / widget. Most people who see the link / button / widget are probably not customers - only leads - and can't rate you.
7. Flyers with instructions
It is more convenient to keep flyers on hand and hand out full A's.
You don't have to think so much about what's going on on the flyers because there isn't much room for it. Just simple instructions, or "Visit us / review us".
Customers who may need more guidance are out of luck.
The flyers are easy to ignore, lose, or throw in the trash.
8. Passive reviews: let reviews “happen”
In certain areas, such as psychotherapy or financial advice, it is difficult to proactively encourage review. In that case, a passive approach is probably all you can do.
It is good to know what your “baseline” is: what kind of reviews and how many ratings you will get just by doing a good job for customers.
Angry customers are more likely to write spontaneous reviews than satisfied customers. You may not be able to encourage the lucky people to speak up, but in that case you better find a way to identify the less fortunate and smooth things out.
Slow progress is better than no progress. It doesn't matter how hard it is to get the happy people to be judged, but more of them will see if you take some steps to make that happen.
By putting together an evaluation strategy, you learn a lot about your customers along the way. You might miss that if you take it slow.
