Love the sound the #GooneyBird flying back into #EssendonAirport from its trip to Flinders Island. #Aerosexual #aviation
Realizing the sheer number of Allied aircraft that would be over Normandy would overwhelm the existing IFF (identification friend or foe) systems, planners for Operation Overload resorted to the simple exponent of black and white invasion stripes- this way the rules of engagement were simple- "if it ain't got stripes, shoot it down". To keep the Luftwaffe from compromising the plan, the invasion stripes plan was a closely guarded secret. On 1 June, a small group of aircraft with stripes overflew the invasion fleet to familiarize the AA gunners. On 3 June the C-47s and other large aircraft were painted and the following day, just 48 hours before D-Day, fighters and attack aircraft were painted. #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #kafw #afw #fortworth #allianceairshow #airport #texas #fwaas2014 #igtexas #Douglas #C47 #DC3 #Skytrain #Dakota #GooneyBird #avgeekery #avgeekschoolofknowledge (at Fort Worth Alliance Airport)
Love me some C-47's. The greatest man I ever had the privilege of knowing used to tell me that they were the best planes ever built and a pleasure to fly. He also told me that with good maintenance they'd last forever. As I recall it he had accumulated over 3000 hours in them during WWII and leading up to the Korean War. As a pilot myself I hope to one day get the opportunity to experience what he might've felt behind the yoke of an ol' "Gooneybird".
