The View from a Jumpseat of "That's All, Brother"
Looking out across the portside wing during a 2024 flight on Douglas C-47 Skytrain "That's All, Brother", the lead aircraft of the D-Day invasion. In the early morning hours of June 6, 1944, a US Army paratrooper from the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, would have looked out across this same wing having departed from Greenham Common in England and crossing the English Channel on his way to Drop Zone Alpha east of Sainte-Mère-Église in Normandy, France.
I can't believe I got to see a REAL C-47 SKYTRAIN and GO IN IT. It was so amazing I was freaking out oh my gosh I was so happy
I got to go to all three locations, Camp Toccoa, Currahee Mountain AND the museum in town like HELLO?!?!?! Such a dream come true.
Placid Lassie - another D-Day veteran in all her glory🥹 She didn’t drop paratroopers, but she did keep the 101st airborne fighting by delivering supplies. She even kept the same crew for the entire time she was used in the war🤯
And fun fact: she was used to deliver aide and goods to the victims of Hurricane Helene last year🥹 she’s a good girl and I’m SO mad I didn’t visit her tent at the airshow😭
Another fun fact my fellow The Boys in the Boat fans will enjoy: her now permanent residence in in Poughkeepsie🫶🏻
