Happy Independence Day, and Happy 119th Forever Birthday to former child actor Gordon Griffith!
Griffith portrayed Tarzan as a lad in the first jungle-lord film, “Tarzan of the Apes” (1918), starring Elmo Lincoln as the adult ape man. Griffith returned for the 1918 sequel, “The Romance of Tarzan,” though his role may have simply been via stock footage; the film is lost, so confirmation is impossible.
In 1920, Griffith teamed with Mae Giraci to portray Tarzan’s son Jack Clayton and his love interest Meriem as children in the silent serial “The Son of Tarzan”. The adult Jack (aka Korak the Killer) and Meriem were portrayed by Kamuela Searle and Manilla Martan.
Born July 4, 1907, in Chicago, Illinois to actors Harry Sutherland Griffith and Katherine Kierman Griffith, Gordon began acting at age four with Universal, and worked for Vitagraph, Keystone, Metro, and Monogram. He continued appearing in roles until adulthood, before transitioning into work as an assistant director and production manager, eventually becoming a Columbia production executive under Harry Cohn. Griffith died of a heart attack on October 12, 1958, in Hollywood, age 51. Photo: Meriem (Mae Giraci) and Akut the ape with Korak (Gordon Griffith) in “The Son of Tarzan” (1920).
