porter has always hated gorgug because their definitions/uses of rages are fundamentally different. gorgug clashes so hard because his rage DOES come from a place of protection and defensiveness (and justice...) and that threatens the foundations of porters beliefs with ankarna
so.. gorgann amiright. DEFINITELY saw this one coming (i didn't but i love it)

I'd like to thank Arthur Aguefort for validating me and educating the masses on the proper classification of the hunk genus
also bonus:
The Bad Kids have got that autistic rizz, and by that I mean that they’re just collecting autistic girls like Pokémon. like??? Zelda, Ayda, Gertie, Mary Ann.
(The Bad Kids also just have an autistic guy named Riz but that’s not the topic I’m on rn.)
You think in freshman year, Gorgug learned to play drums because of Fig?
Fig who keeps coming to Barbarian class every day despite not being a Barbarian. Fig who keeps sussing Porter and supportive of Gorgug. Fig who is Gorgug's friend in class.
You think Gorgug wanted to do something nice for Fig in return? That he tried to get the courage to go to Bard class for the day, but maybe was too shy or nervous about going, about skipping class. Did he reach out to older Bard students, or the Bard teacher to learn the basics? Or did he self study, listening to tutorial videos in his room learning how to keep a beat? How many drums did he break while practicing? Did his parents try to make him a drum strong enough, only to realize that you can tinker with a drum tarp? Did playing the drums help Gorgug control his strength: enough to make a noise but not enough to break? How long did he practice? Weeks? Months? Was it meant as a solstice gift, or did Gorgug tell Fig on the side that he learned drums to play? Was Fig excited for the Hudol Party because it would be their first official gig together as a band? Was Fig encouraging as Gorgug was nervous, trying to keep the simple beat in his head as he supports his friend on stage?
Did Gorgug learn drums as an act of love?
i think it's important as autistic people to remember that relating to a character does not necessarily make them autistic . like i understand the want to have characters that are autistic and portray the nuances of that , even if that's not the creator's intent with that character . i do that shit all the time & it definitely has value , especially as many creators exaggerate traits for comedy or to highlight character growth and inadvertently make that character appear autistic
but -- and im using gorgug fantasy high as an example because he's on my mind -- sometimes there's just a better explanation than autism . he's an adopted racial minority raised in a hippie household with parents and community members that inevitably make his physical size more apparent to him . all of that will make a person awkward as hell , especially going into highschool ( not to mention in the middle of puberty ) . yes i can absolutely see the autistic angle here , but honestly it's not unrealistic to say he would have these traits regardless
his parents emphasized passivity and trusting others because of the physical difference in size between them and him , inevitably making him feel othered and different from those around him . they love him , but they likely felt they had a responsibility to remind him how much bigger he was than the other kids in his neighborhood , how easily he could scare them or even hurt them . i can't imagine there weren't moments when his barbarian rage came out where they themselves weren't frightened ( not to mention the tree is just not built for him . he breaks things often just because of how much smaller they are to him than to his parents )
that reads far more like a racial story than it does an autistic one to me . he's awkward because he has been led to fear his own body , his own emotions . he cannot truly embrace his unique brand of rage until his junior year because of the lessons his parents instilled in him . this is not inherent to him , like how many people would interpret autistic behavior to be awkward whether we're masking or not . and he is masking , yes , but it doesn't feel like autistic masking . it feels like the masking of someone who was raised in a culture where orcs are seen as brutish and scary , so he feels the need to make himself smaller in order to not be perceived as a threat
( there is of course an element of nonhuman characters making real the differences that only really exist in our minds in the real world , such as the strength and size difference between a largely white-coded race like gnomes and a largely black-coded race like orcs . but that's a whole nother issue smarter people than me have covered in more depth than i could )
ty for the support on my fig cosplay!! here's some more eccc pictures with my gorgug (nym_does_cos) 🎸
