Feel free to shoot me an ask any time :) I love to chit-chat!
For some lore:
I realized I was a therian about 15 years ago when I stumbled across a wiki article for therianthropy over a decade ago. It put a name to thoughts and feelings I had had for as long as I could remember.
I've explored various possible theriotypes over the years--including mule deer, lion, and wolverine--but nowadays, I best understand myself as a mountain gorilla (primarily) and a red-tailed hawk (secondarily). Understanding myself and my experiences is a never-ending journey!
In my "human life", I work in an environmental-related field. I'm also neurodivergent and a trans man. I do find my trans-ness and neurodiversity plays a part in my therianthropy, and you may see me ramble here and there about how those three things intersect in my own life.
My brother and I have been playing through Split Fiction together and it's scratching such an itch for my shapeshifterkin ass. My otter paratype in particular is eating good. It's got stuff for all sorts of kintypes/theriotypes though since it's got so many different sections with different forms you take. We haven't made it through all of it, but so far you get to play as humans (in sci-fi/cyberpunk and fantasy settings), pigs (though that side story might have some triggering meat industry stuff for some folks), a fairy, a treeant, a gorilla, and an otter/fish sorta thing. It's also just a really great coop game to play with a friend.
Been musing on names lately - in particular, whether or not I want an alternate name for my gorilla-self or not.
I 100% understand why people often do pick alternative names for themselves as therian/otherkin, but for me personally, my thoughts boil down to two things:
I already picked my "human" name because I'm trans, so the name I go by in my day-to-day life feels like it belongs to me/is one I identify with
If I were born a theriform gorilla, I would not have any sort of spoken or written name (except a nickname from wildlife biologists who might study me, maybe lol). My "name" would be my scent, my personality, my presence - maybe a certain inflection in a contact call. So giving that part of myself a different written/spoken moniker almost feels pointless?
Anyone else feel this way? Or care to share how and why you chose the name you did as it relates to your alterhumanity? I'd love to hear some perspectives!
i was camping last week and had what i might consider a "shift", and i've been thinking about it ever since
i got this very visceral mental image of my entire body growing medium-length brown fur and my nose becoming dark and slightly damp, like how most caniform's noses are. it honestly seemed like the typical sasquatch or really oldschool werewolf portrayals
it felt like i had stepped away from human society and "unleashed the real me", even if only in my mind's eye. this is not the first time this particular shift has happened to me, and this form is one of my earliest shifting memories back in childhood
so now i'm considering if this is some novel way my gorilla theriotype manifested (since it does share many characteristics with my gorilla 'type) or if this is a different 'type entirely. one of the first 'types I thought I was was a werewolf - and I'm wondering if this is still true, but perhaps mine is a different form than most werewolf otherkin seem to be (which tends to be much more wolf-like than the classic "wolfman" archetype)
