WHY IS MURIEL STANDING WITH THE ARCHANGELS?!!!
Listen I know everyone is excited for petty Crowley in series 3, I am too. HOWEVER, I also desperately need a super bitchy Aziraphale. Because here is the thing, in what little we know about Series 3, we know that the Second Coming is on its way and Crowley and Aziraphale aren't talking. And we have to remember that Aziraphale is also angry with Crowley, just as Crowley is angry with Aziraphale. To Aziraphale, Crowley is the one who walked away when he needed him. So when I tell you that both of them are going to be petty as hell to the other, I mean PETTY. I wouldn't be suprised if they didn't directly talk to each other for an entire episode but instead just passive aggressively had someone else be the middle man. Like Aziraphale will come into the bookshop where Crowley is moping (definitely not trying to keep an eye on Aziraphale), and Muriel has to be in the middle of this:
"Oi, kid, tell the sUpReMe ArChAnGeL to shove his apology up righteous ass"
"Muriel, will you please tell Mr. Kiss and Run that I'm not here to apologize when I was doing my JOB"
"Tell his most holiness that his only job is licking HEAVENS BOOT like a pratt"
And on and on.
Now, do I think that Aziraphale and Crowley will spend the season learning how to communicate with each other and actually discuss what they were trying to say in the last moments of season 2? Absolutely. Do I want to see Aziraphale really fight for Crowley like Crowley fights for him? Yeah, a bit. Do I need them to make a big love confession scene where they make up and finally say I love you? Yes, and I think we will get something adjacent to that. But I think they are going to be serving up divorcees in a sitcom that end up together again before that.

Summary:
“What do you want?” Crowley snapped, throwing the door open. “Oh. Er…” “Hello.” Aziraphale stood on the front porch, sopping wet. He brushed his hair off his forehead, looking up at the clouds. “Seems to be raining a bit.”
fic under the cut!
Okay but imagine this is how good omens s3 ends:
Ext, Southdown cottage, Aziraphale and Crowley sat together on a bench beneath and apple tree, drinking wine, Crowleys arm over Aziraphales shoulders.
Crowley: angel…
Aziraphale: yes my dear
Crowley: you hear that?
Aziraphale gives Crowley a happy, knowing look (you know the one) and rests his head on Crowleys shoulder.
Camera slowly pans up into the apple tree where a nightingale is singing. Fades into ‘a nightingale sang in Berkeley square’ as camera pans out to show the Southdown cottage/ garden and the credits start playing.
What do we really know about the Metatron - part 2: Supreme Archangel Material
This meta started out with the larest interview with Doon Mackichan, the little snippet we got on Michael in s3 (if you don't know and don't want the spoilers, don't worry, this meta doesn't mention much). I started thinking of what we know about what drives different characters. @crowleysgirl56 , @vidavalor and @komorezuki have written recently about Michael as well, and this in turn led to me thinking what we actually know about the other actors, mainly the Metatron and his motivations. I realised that it might be a good idea to map the motivations of all the other key characters side by side to see if I can figure something out from that picture. “Looking where the furniture isn’t” and all that. It quickly merged with my old half-formed idea of the colour-coding of the angel clothing having a meaning, and so by the end of my little excel escapade, I formed two theories that I would like to share:
Angel belief system visualised through colour coding
What makes one Supreme Archangel material, or what does the Metatron want
They are both too long to be shared in a single post, so while they can be read independently, in this part we focus on the character overview and possible motivations.
Character motivation comparison
Let us start with what we know about each character motivation. I am drawing up a complete blank on the Metatron, but here is a view on everyone else.
This paints an interesting picture of our players and a view of why the Metatron might or might not have wanted certain persons taking the role of the Supreme Archangel. It also provides good thinking grounds for how each character is likely to behave during the Second Coming.
Supreme Archangel Material
So what is it, that the Metatron wants in a Supreme Archangel? The surface answer could be that they are easy to manipulate and would tow the line, in other words, high on fear and believe in Heaven’s declared cause (or at least good at the PR part of it).
Who do we have as supposedly clear Supreme Archangel material? Michael and Uriel (also, the first names that Aziraphale suggests). We know that Gabriel did wonderfully as the Supreme Archangel for over two thousand years, right until he fell in love and stopped pretending he gives a damn about the cause.
The less likely candidates are Sandalphon and Saraquel, but let us keep them in our view for context. I will also add Muriel as they are clearly part of the Metatron’s plan and sort of represents countless lower order angels for us as the viewers.
So, let us take a look at the scores (they are all as per my perception, of course). The negative scores on following the plan in reality would be much higher for Aziraphale and Crowley, but they skewed the chart a bit, so let us keep them at manageable levels:
So why pick Aziraphale?
If we assume, the Metatron did not like Michael for the traits they scored high on (pride and bravery, same as Gabriel), Aziraphale is a poor choice.
If he wanted someone he could manipulate (so higher on fear), why is Uriel not a good choice? They at least somewhat believe in the cause!
It is interesting to see how Muriel scores high on most points, except pride. Is this a coincidence, or a result of the humbling experience of being demoted and memory-wiped? (Gabriel is also quite a bit less proud after the memory loss, although still self-assured, but I suppose some people are just like that)
You might also be wondering why I put Crowley in this chart, and while at first he was just there for the outfit colour code comparison, I figured it would be interesting to see how he scores because "he hasn't always been a demon", and he might indeed have been one of the archangels ("Always asking those damn fool questions" - see that curiosity score).
The only reason I can think of, is that he wants to physically separate Aziraphale and Crowley, because their meddling has already hampered plans once, and also because their tiny joint miracle was a bit too much, and they were trying to be subtle! And now they know their power and make no secret of their independent status and affinity to Earth and humanity, and the Metatron doesn't like that. And the only way he could think of making Aziraphale come back is to offer him that role of the Supreme Archangel, probably not planning to give him any executive power or support (which is a recipe for Aziraphale’s failure, of course, because the archangel circle is just not going to play ball with him).
I just thought of something...
Aziraphale is about to have access to like, everything, isn't he?
Including, maybe, what happened to Crowley.
You have to think, as much of a guardian as he is, how pissed off he would be seeing what happened himself. Maybe it would be exactly the kind of thing to make Aziraphale realize how much he understands about what Heaven is, how wrong it was for him to offer to reinstate Crowley as an angel again.
