What would be your Halloween costume of choice? (I’m stuck between Q’arth & Targaryen)
NOT MY EDIT
If someone in a post says they hate costume design in GoT, I'll be like ok. Can't relate, still love most of it, but you do you. But when you say fashion described in the books is better, you're just lying. Next you'll say it's more historically accurate lol.

I always hated Sansa's Lannister child bride dress because it has the drape and look of curtain fabric. It's like clothes meant for the forgotten stepchild, not the key to the North. But then again, as much as I once appreciated the design philosophy of Clapton (integrating modern haute couture for a unique aesthetic, sort of parahistory), I think it also led to disasters like that which didn't appreciate a given scene's context.
And then whatever happened after Season 5 when everything was dark, sad, and from the clearance rack at the fabric store...
I’ve been staring at the Lannister child bride dress for a very long time now trying to figure out why I hate it so much. You totally just articulated it to me. It’s actually not a shapeless dress, but it looks that way since the fabric is so heavy and the front of the bodice is so flat and square looking.
It actually looks better without the cross strap shape wise, since there’s more of a shape visible, but the cross strap is also the only piece that adds some much needed detail. The metal hip things are just so jarring. I think it’s trying to invoke the 18th century a little, but it’s not working. The bodice is the wrong shape and it’s not meshing with the bottom silhouette. It really does look like it was thrown together from curtains and I can’t I unsee that now.
I do think Michelle Clapton has some interesting ideas, but as some one who’s not very interested in modern haute couture, I would have appreciated an approach more grounded in historical fashion. I’m definitely biased in this regard, as I hope to work more on the intersection of textile and women’s history, so take my opinion with a grain of salt I guess, lol. Fashion and textile history isn’t taken all that seriously to start with, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a lot of interesting lenses through which to view history. She did succeed in creating a unique aesthetic for GoT in the early seasons, but it got lost later in the fact that all the costumes were so dark and the lighting was also too dark to see anything. There were a few standout looks post s5, mainly Sansa’s blue wolf dress which is proof that we could have had nice things, and makes the rest so much sadder.
I think the embroidery should have been more front and center considering how stunningly beautiful all of it is, but we get very few costumes that actually show case it.
Hi, Fedon! You’re an historian, right? Are you well-versed in the history of fashion? I’m asking because I wanted to know your opinions and headcanons about asoiaf’s fashion. How do you imagine it? Were you satisfied with the show’s dresses and gowns? Would you have changed anything? What about the hairstyles?
Hi there!
O dear! I'm absolutely and completely rubbish at fashion even the fashion of my own time!
I look at clothes and all I think is : I like them or I don't like them. 😂
I'm not the right person to ask. You could try and ask @trinuviel. My fields are definitely not the history of fashion.
I can say only a few things. I didn't care for the hairstyle in season 1, the wigs were too 18th century for me, but the clothes were O.k. Because they had wide sleeves and lots of cloth. In the Middle Ages the rich and upper class people were dressing in masses of cloth, because it was expensive and that way you could show your wealth. The Starks clad in fur also made sense although the furs were too rugged and not exquisite enough. Give me some ermine or other striking furs (not real obviously)!
The whole tight sleeves, black aesthetics Michelle Clapton went for in the last seasons was not only boring but it also makes no sense. No one in the Middle ages with even a little money would have worn tight sleeves. First of all they didn't have stretch cloth, and second it would look cheap to people from the middle ages. Would Queen Cersei be so poor that she couldn't afford wide sleeves? And dyes?
I liked the dresses in season 3 and four. They looked like rich embroidered cloth and they were colourful with coats of arms and all that. It makes sense to have dresses like that, embroidered or brocade. That shows effort and money.
I also liked Sansa's self made dress in season 6, a dark green velvety cloth with embroidery. That rang true to me.
As for changing anything? I would definitely have not engaged Michelle Clapton...
Sry, not sry. Dyes were expensive. Give the aristocracy some colour. I hated season 7 and 8 dresses.
But this is just my opinion and general ideas. I'm really neither an expert nor even an enthusiast!
Thanks for the ask!
