Okay, folks, I know I confessed to being a wee bit amused by all the mourning and gnashing of teeth over the apparently very disappointing end of Gane of Thrones.
But now it’s just ugly. I almost don’t want to get on tumblr because it’s just a bunch of people berating other people over their opinions of the fates of a bunch of fictional people on a tv show.
It’s REALLY ugly. And mean. And entirely unnecessary. So stop it, okay? The show’s over. Maybe we’ll get the ending of the books some day. Maybe we won’t. Who knows?
But in the mean time, can’t we just enjoy the things we love about the characters in the books or shows without demanding that the entire world agree with our feelings? Or spiral into depression because something we really, really wanted didn’t become “canon”?
Who cares? Any of us who reads or writes fic essentially decided canon is all good and well, but not really necessary for our enjoyment of the ASOIAF world. We can play with these fictional people, change the story, make up our own fictional people and stick them in the story—we can do whatever we want! How awesome is that?
A significant percentage of folks who love ASOIAF as much as I do think that my very favorite character is Satan incarnate.
Neither GRRM nor D&D will EVER give me a happy ever after for my OTP, and I could scream at people on the internet all day every day, and my beloved Lady Catelyn Stark is still gonna be hated by a lot of people.
So what? I’m gonna write and read whatever fic makes me happy. I’ll discuss these characters and this fictional world with anyone who wants to talk about it. And nothing can take that from me.
Please, folks. Literature is made to be enjoyed, and every single reader will enjoy it in their own individual way. It’s wonderful to interact, and share, and discuss, and debate, but please, let’s all try to be kind to each other.
