A Game of Thrones-related ask game!
4. When did you first get into GoT/ASoIAF?
This is a tricky one. I didn’t just start watching GOT or reading the books like most people. The summer GOT first aired we didn’t have HBO at home and additionally, I was about to start college. Thus, the immediate future and years afterward were filled with me pouring everything I had into school.
At one point we did get HBO though. I can’t remember what my first episode was but I think it was around season 3. I clearly remember my Dad being outright shocked when Jaime’s hand got chopped off and going around saying nonsense like “Wah!” “Wheh!” “Holy crap!” “WHat?!” for a while, so I’d pin point my first episode around that time. Not sure if it was a rerun we were watching (for our first times though)…
But then I got into it more and more and we bought every season when they came out and I got right into the show. We’ve done some rewatches since. I fancy another one but of course stopping at S8 e4.5…
I started reading the books a couple years ago too (but university gets in the way of you having nice things). I do absolutely love GRRM’s writing. I was blown away by his description, specifically a part in book 1 where there’s some sort of pond or pool that Dany is looking upon in the moonlight. I live for that stuff in books :)
11. What’s an unpopular GoT opinion you have?
As I’m writing these answers, I realize they’re kind of boring and lame. But I don’t exactly know if I have an unpopular opinion?
Does the Jaime Lannister Is Alive Clown Club count? Does actually being ok with Theon’s ending count? Does loving Ramsay Bolton count?!! *Ahem*
I guess the biggest unpopular opinion I’ve had with the show, and this was before the abomination that was season 8 when I was a naive and positive out-looking person, is that I actually liked the writing of the show up until the end of season 7. I thought it was good. I thought they were building things up and making us suspenseful and causing us to agonize over our favorite characters. For example, there was a lot of buzz about Jaime sleeping with Cersei again in S7. It made us all angry at him. But I thought they were just setting him up to have a big breaking point (which he kind of did to be fair). Afterall, I had gone through the entire show feeling things and emotions that no other TV show had really made me feel. No one was safe. The great Larry Gelbart (creator of M*A*S*H) once said that the key to good writing is to “put your best characters in the places they’d least like to be”. And that’s something Game of Thrones has done extremely well. I thought that’s ultimately what had been happening and was very impressed. Then season 8 happened.
15. What GoT scene made you cry the most?
Maybe it’s because I didn’t start watching from the first episode and I knew things going back to watch from the beginning, but I haven’t teared up too much over GOT to be completely honest. I mean, no water works for the Red Wedding… No waterworks for Ned’s beheading…I’m not cruel and heartless, I just missed the build up!
That being said, the saddest thing on GOT was Jon Snow’s death. I tried real hard to hide them waterworks, I tell ya! I adopted him and then he died. Not cool. I got real attached to his character and was all heart-eyes for his romance with Ygritte. So naturally, her death hit me hard too. At that point Jon was the most relatable and good-hearted person on the show in my opinion and I grew real attached. Then he met Dany and afterwards season 8 happened.
And the other part that really made me truly sad was Brienne writing Jaime’s legacy in the White Book. It felt like a slap in the face. For her to pen “Died protecting his queen” made me so angry on her behalf. She deserved so much better. I could go on and on on why her ending was one of the worst, but that’s a rant for another day. It was just really sad because no one has ever loved her. No one has ever considered her beautiful and worthy of love. And then she found it with Jaime but then season 8 happened and D&D made sure that it came across like she was never truly loved by anyone after all.
Honorable sad mention to Jorah. Just Jorah in general. He a good dude. He loved Dany. He never got that love reciprocated properly. He died defending his love. He a good dude. Jorah <3
Thanks for the questions! ^.^
