there was smth about atla that was just so engaging which lok kind of lacked? lol was great but atla was smth else…
yeah i think about this a lot! and keeping in mind that more or less the same team made both shows, you cant claim its because of different creators
my stance on why atla was more engaging was because first and foremost, the creators had a good budget and freedom. so they were allowed to make complex, overarching plots, & they were allowed to have arcs that took up more than one season. lok didnt have that kind of security, cause they were never sure if theyd get a new season. so every season had to have had its own little plot that, if a new season didnt come, it still would feel “finished” by the finale
that kinda sucks because it wrecks the “closure” you get from it. lok couldnt build up to an ultimate finale because of their restraints, nor could they fit the same amount of “good plot” into one season. what ends up happening is that you get a decent- but not amazing- plot that goes through its run, finishes, you feel like its over, and then in the next season something new pops up to take up time. your sense of closure from the last season feels cheap, and you feel cheated
its kinda like the sensation of when an author finishes a series and its really good and then they make a new series thats built off of it and like fine its probably good but now the entire first serie’s finale feels like it doesnt mean much anymore (oh no im tacitly referencing pjato again yikes)
i think if such a thing wasnt a problem for the team then they wouldve gone a different way or at least melded the plots together more cohesively...
the other more auxiliary points about atla are that i found it more goofy than lok. maybe its because the gaang is younger, maybe its because they had more playful characters in general
atla had sokka and aang, who are consistently playful vs katara and toph and zuko, who are more balanced otherwise- but sokka and aang made katara, toph, and zuko more fun (i’d include suki but she ws only part of gaang near the end but her too!) the show had a lot of uselessly funny moments. there was a lot of immaturity. it was endearing as hell
lok had bolin and meelo, i guess (maybe wu near the end)? in terms of equivalency in how playful they were. but mako was kinda super serious all the time, and korra and asami were balanced but. i guess they had a lot of responsibilities through the show that made it feel like they werent able to be as playful, as often. also lok felt far more mature in tone.
finally i feel like the worldbuilding in atla was amazing and the fact that the shows plot revolved very much around aang travelling the world, we got to see a new environment practically every episode. and dont get me started on how fulfilling each characters own arcs were. if i wanted to talk about zuko, aka one of the best redemption arcs in the history of ever, that would need a whole other post
im gay for atla
