Of course it started raining right now. You had just gotten off work and although it had been cloudy all day in Gotham, you were hoping to get home before the rain started.
But as most people living in Gotham know, lucky is hardly on your side.
The clouds were a dark grey and the whole sky was already dark. Only faulty lamp posts lighting your way through foggy streets so the rain wasn't really helping you out.
Now, living in Gotham allowed you to pick up on a few survival skills. One being, when you heard groans of pain or serious voices coming from an alley, get the hell away from there.
Maybe it was cruel because someone could be hurt and in need of help but there was no saying of what could be hiding in the dark behind them.
So when you did hear the muffled groan and then silence? You were going to walk right past and block that out. If only you hadn't caught a glimpse of him.
The guy wasn't in full view and the rain was making it hard as well, but one thing you couldn't deny?
The blue and red suit.
Superman was known to stop in Gotham very very rarely. It was definitely a space very opposite of Metropolis. So when he did it was usually for a quick stop or something extremely important.
You only just peaked into the alleyway to confirm it was him.
His muffled groans had stopped already and he wasn't moving anymore. Was he alive? Could Superman even die? You had too many of random vigilantes in Gotham to keep tabs on so you didn't really bother with the others.
With a sigh you decided to ignore the logical part of your brain and slowly stepped closer to him. Keeping your gaze trained on him and everywhere else around you just in case. It was still Gotham.
"Superman?"
Your voice came out unintentionally quiet.
Still no response.
A few steps closer. You were right behind his laid out body. His back to you. Peaking over you could see the blood and tares on his suit. His eyes were closed.
Holy shit was Superman really dead?
After a few more seconds of slightly panicked staring…you kicked him.
It probably didn't feel like much to a literal alien with what you knew to be an extremely high pain tolerance.
Just a quick clean kick right to his back.
He suddenly groaned and you quickly jumped back.
Should you run off? Would he smite you or something? Can't just leave him here though, can you?
"You know…never been kicked by a civilian before."
His voice was deep and gravely. Clearly pained as he rolled over onto his back. Groaning slightly when he finally pulled himself into a sitting position.
"I was seeing if you were dead."
An amused and slightly surprised chuckle fell from his lips.
"Nah I'm still kicking. Thank you."
Your eye brow raised for a second as you looked at the clearly exhausted kryptonian.
"You're thanking me for kicking you like you were a dead bug?"
"I'm thanking you…for caring. Not everyone would check on me. Even outside of Gotham."
"Yeah don't give me too much credit. I was going to before I saw the suit."
Superman nodded solemnly. A weird part of you wanted to feel bad for saying it. His determination to always do good had a way of making others want to as well.
"So. I mean now that I know you aren't dead or anything, why were you even here?"
"I was just visiting someone. But apparently being who I am tends to draw attention."
You stepped forward a bit and crouched down. Fingers tracing the edge of his cape.
"Really? Being a huge guy wearing a bright blue suit with bright red underwear and a cape, flying across the sky brings you attention? I'm shocked. Truly."
A small tired grin made its way onto his face. "Me too."
You weren't as guard anymore. Eyes a little less worried and scrutinizing.
"Thought you were supposed to heal really fast or whatever?"
He winced at a sudden pain when he tried to move. Without thinking you placed your hands on his shoulders, immediately stopping him. Silently assuring him that it was okay to just stay there for a bit.
Even in Gothams darkest nights, his big blue eyes shown like no other. So very bright and full of love and care.
"Usually it's much faster yes. But I get my energy from the sun. And…clearly she doesn't really show up her much so my bodies having a hard time."
"…so you like…photosynthesis?" It was hard to hold back your stifled giggles.
The large kryptonian looked dumbfounded for a moment as he stared at you. Registering very slowly what you just said.
"I…oh gosh I do."
The second he said that you were full on cackling now.
Without you noticing (too busy laughing your ass off) his gaze turned tender and soft.
Your laugh was nice. The way your skin crinkled by your eyes and mouth. The bright smile and the absolutely angelic tone of your laughter.
Despite his earlier pain and worries. Your laughter felt like it had lifted something in him. Reminding him why he fought for people just like you.
He wanted people to be happy. Wanted them to be hopeful. Most of all he wanted those good feelings to infect everyone.
Soon enough, your laughs died down and you wiped a few tears from laughing so hard. Making eye contact with him again.
"Well Superman, I'm glad we found that out because that's hilarious. Now we should probably get your sad puppy looking ass out of here huh?"
His brows furrowed. Only proving your point further. With his big expressfull eyes, wet curls that laid against his forehead, that stupid little curl in the front still there somehow.
Even the way his bottom lip jutted out just slightly and his shoulders hunched forward to make himself seem smaller.
Really the epitome of sad wet puppy.
He decided not to comment on it. "I'm not sure I'm in great enough condition to fly."
You shrugged like you didn't even plan on that in the first place. Which you really didn't.
"Yeah my place isn't far, it's fine. You can chill there if you want."
"That's…very kind of you." There he goes again with those stupidly kind eyes, only making you roll yours. It wasn't fair how sweet he was.
"Yeah yeah I'm great, let's go big guy. Can you stand?"
He nodded slightly and pulled himself up. Groaning the second he did. You didn't hesitate to move under his arm. Looping it around your shoulders to give him some support.
Getting past those last few stairs, you were able to open your apartment door and help him in. In no time, having him laid out across your couch.
"Good?"
He sighed out.
"Good. Thank you again."
You nodded and left the room. Coming back just minutes later eith a heat lamp. His eyes were closed while you set it up. Only opening when he could seeing the bright light thorough his eyelids.
"…is that a heat lamp?"
"Yeah. It's not the sun but close enough."
Clark didn't have the guts to tell you that the reason the Sun on this Earth helped him was not because of the heat and instead was the solar radiation which heat lamps didn't give off.
Only giving you an appreciative smile as you turned toward the kitchen. He could admit the heat felt nice compared to the rainy outdoors they had just been in.
"You drink tea Superman?"
"I do."
His eyes watched your quiet movements. Grabbing tea packets from a small cabinet and bringing out two mugs while a kettle heated up on the stove.
Only ten minutes later were you both sat on the couch, sipping your tea from random mugs you had collected over the years.
"I guess I have somewhere to go whenever I get hurt in Gotham now dont I?"
"Thought you'd have Batman for that?"
"The caretaker scares me sometimes." He was talking about Alfred. There had been a few times where Alfred was a little too intense. Even his medic skills were freakishly good. Very different from his Ma patching him up with gentle shushes.
Though that didn't stop her from giving the occasional pinch when he moved to much.
"Wow. Big guy who can lift buildings is scared of a caretaker. You know you really are full of surprises?"
He hummed softly and took another sip of tea.
"Metropolis better know I saved their favourite superhero from bleeding out in an Gotham alleyway."
"I'll make sure that your efforts are well recognized there."
