I recently went to an open house at the observatory on campus at Valparaiso University. As a physics major with a focus in astronomy, I was stoked to see the equipment I will be working with later in my academic career. The stars were jaw dropping to the common eye that night I couldn’t wait to look at the sky even closer. 

We looked at Saturn, and photos do it justice, but still it was inspiring to see it with my own eyes. We looked at Neptune and I couldn’t believe the deep blue with my own eyes, the same color as my irises. Finally, we looked at a binary star system which looked like a flashing light in the sky. Even thought I know the science behind that blinking, it was still hard not to believe it was a signal from someone or something.

I’m so grateful to soon have this technology at my fingertips thanks to Valparaiso University and the wonderful staff of the Physics Department.

A little while ago, I went to a talk by Dr. Fred Whitehurst about how and why he became a “whistle blower”. He talked about his career in FBI laboratories and how people often worked on evidence and testified outside of their field. He spoke to his superiors, even presidents, and they didn’t do anything for decades. Eventually realizing no one in the FBI would do anything internally, he spoke out and became a “whistle blower” in order to free innocent people incarcerated by wrongfully charged because of fraudulent testimony. Obviously his superiors weren’t happy and he no longer works there.

I’m astounded that my university, Valparaiso University, would allow someone to give a lecture who spoke against the wrong doings in our law enforcement and ultimately our government. It gave me new respect for VU’s pursuit of truth. It showed that VU is not only giving us the pretty or academic truths but they’re also willing to show us the ugly truths to broaden our minds and give perspective. I appreciate my school.
