The King's High Council
Any good ruler knows their limitations and surrounds themselves with competent advisors to account for this. If you’ve ever wondered who those advisors may be below are some examples of titles and responsibilities they may have held. With the exception of “Lord High Wizard” they can all fit into a “historical” campaign setting relativly smoothly.
Lord High Chamberlain: The chamberlain acts as his lords right hand. He controls access to The Lord and often acts on his behalf. Orders issued by the chamberlain are assumed to carry the full backing of The Lord and are to be carried out without question. It is his duty to coordinate reports from lesser officials and present his lord with the information needed to make wise decisions. In many cases when an audience is requested it will be the chamberlain, not The Lord, who resolves the issue.
Lord High Chancellor: The High Chancellor is I trusted with the day to day running of the government. They are head of the civil service and answerable only to the Lord, excepting where they may require The Lord High Chamberlain’s approval. The relationship between these two offices is close if not smooth. Their people organize tax collection, internal political relations and the distribution of all royal decrees.
Lord High Justice: The Lord High Justice is in charge of the legal system. It is their responsibility to see that laws are enforced and criminals punished. They oversee the local judges and town militias. Those who report to the them are the High Sheriff (head of the town militia), the High Prosecutor (who prosecutes criminals) and the High Forester (oversees the lords woods and prevents poaching).
Lord High Marshal: They head the Lord’s military forces, commanding the actions of the armies and the city watch. In all matters requiring the use of the Lord’s troops or knights they are the absolute authority. The Lord Marshal also commands the Royal Armorer and armories, the hiring of mercenaries and acquisition of new military assets or strategies.
Lord High Inquisitor: The Lord High Inquisitor is head of the Lord’s intelligence network. They control the spies and agents in the Lord’s castle, holdings of his vassals and in neighboring kingdoms.
Lord High Wizard: The Lord High Wizard allows The Lord to have access to powerful magics and is also a display of his wealth and power. As funding their upkeep and experiments is costly only the wealthiest lords can afford one.
Lord High Chaplain: The Lord High Chaplain represents the religious community in the Lord’s holdings. Generally the High Chaplain will be a high ranking member of the most powerful church in the realm. If multiple religions are of near equal influence their may be multiple versions of this office. The High Chaplain manages relations between the Lord and the Church they represent.
