Rewatching to GOW Laufey state of play and the start just solidifies my belief that Faye died of sickness and passed in her sleep. Because the first places she looks are over both her shoulders for Kratos and Atreus— Atreus has the separate bed further to the back of the home and Kratos is obviously next to her.

All of this to say, Kratos and Atreus probably woke to Faye being cold and stiff
