Conveet Yort GPA to a 4.0 Scale

Hi There,

I’m applying for an internship and its asking me for my gpa on a 4.0 scale but York doesn’t have that.

How do I convert this:

                       Sessional GPA     Cumulative GPA  

Overall GPA         4.75                      5.09 Major GPA            4.75                     5.14 

Also do you think there will be time in the near future where York will actually make things easier by using the 4.0 scale. Its  actually frustrating in the middle of an application. Or is there a website I can use to help me out in the near future.

Hey there! Unfortunately, you can’t convert just using this data because the different courses have different weights (3 vs 6 vs 9 credit courses). I would suggest contacting the place you are applying to it and explaining the situations, I have no doubt that other York students have probably applied there before.

I don’t think York will ever go to a 4.0 scale tbh. Just too much work.

Not sure about law school, but when you apply to med school through OMSAS they will convert your 9.0 GPA to a 4.0 scale for you. You should aim for an 8.0+ GPA on York’s scale at the minimum due to competition. Last I checked, the admission average for UofT (med school) has been 3.9 on a 4.0 scale for the past three years (that’s close to a perfect GPA!).

Anon, there is no reference to grade scales on that page because they require you to select a program of study before showing you requirements. Second, GPA can be calculated with the formula: (GPA ÷ 9.0)x4.0=GPA on 4.0 scale. So if you had a 6.5, (6.5 ÷9.0)x4.0=2.8

What percentage grade is a 7.97 GPA? My grad school apps are asking me for my percentage average and I don't know how to convert it.

A 6.5 gpa is a 74% right? Also it's a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale right?

Yes it is a 74% and no, it would be a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Conversion scale here.

I saw a question you answered yesterday about medical school and GPA and I just wanted to correct something because when I first read it, it scared me. A 3.8 = 8 on the York Scale. The OMSAS conversion is 9 = 4.0, 8 = 3.8, 7 = 3.3, 6 = 3.0, etc. Not the 8.5 GPA as suggested. Since York doesn't give final percentages we lose a lot of potential 3.9s for 85%-89% grades, but the good thing is you aren't as penalized for 80-84% grades.

Yes I’m aware of that, I’ve already addressed this yesterday (IF you read the post) and I also stated that you should aim for an 8.0 or above for med school - the 8.5 was a rough estimate/example (again stated in the post already if you actually read it). 

OMSAS does conversions for you when you apply, so there’s no need to worry about making mistakes in conversions.

Actually your GPA calculation equation is incorrect because the conversion from a 9.0 York scale to a 4.0 standard scale is NOT direct (due to the non-proportionality of the 4.0 scale intervals). For a proper, exact conversion you must use the GPA calculator on the York website OR manually convert each 9.0 scale grade to a 4.0 scale grade and then average that out. I know you're just trying to give a rough estimate and help but the error can be quite misleading and costly to some people.

There’s actually several ways of doing it and many vary according to the institution you apply to for grad school, but obviously I only did this one for example purposes and also to give the previous anon (who the original question was pertaining to) an idea of how high a GPA is required to apply to med school - aiming for an A (8.0 or higher on York’s scale) will give them better chances of being accepted.

York’s GPA calculator only shows your GPA on a 9.0 scale, it does not do conversions to a 4.0 scale.

I understand where you’re coming from, but these are rough estimates like you said - when you’re actually going through the application process, the school you apply to will convert the GPA for you (if they use a different scale), so you don’t have to worry about it.
