“Rock In Athens ‘85″ was a mythical rock marathon which is looked upon as a milestone for concerts in modern history of live events in Greece, a legendary 2-day music festival which took place in 1985 at the ancient Kallimarmaro Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens, Greece, home to the first modern Olympic Games of 1896, with a line-up which included some of the hottest punk rock and post punk acts, such as Stranglers, The Cure, Nina Hagen & The Clash in what was going to be their last live gig before their final break-up a few months later, as well as Depeche Mode, Culture Club and many more (see relevant posts on “Rock In Athens ‘85″ here).
Keeping in mind that not many concerts were being held in Greece at the time, people were really thrilled for such a huge for the era’s standards event, with Clash being the most anticipated act. The diversity of music styles brought together punks, rockers, new-wavers and pop fans in a surreal mixture of Greeks and tourists and an estimated 90.000 people attended the festival in total.
32 years later this legendary rock festival has been reenacted as a playmobil diorama, this time by GRecobil, an avid Greek playmobil collector who set it up using almost 3.000 playmobil figures, as part of the “GR80s – Greece in the Eighties” exhibition which opened this January in Athens.
