It was installed in the mid-1930s by inventor Alonzo Billups over growing concern due to numerous accidents at the crossing involving trains and motor vehicles. The prototype was removed after less than thirty years of service, being replaced with standard railway crossing flashers and bells.

UPDATE: Another vintage photo has surfaced (top) showing the North Shore Line crossing at Garfield Avenue in Libertyville with crossing gates and shelters on both sides of the ROW. The crossing gate in front of the building at right is the one whose foundation has been excavated.

Below: Photos I took on 11/30/2019 showing the excavation of the grade crossing gate concrete foundation next to the North Shore Bike Path. The residence shown in the original photo (at right) is being renovated and apparently the concrete foundation was excavated during this renovation. Note the wires which lead back to the ROW (now a bike path) via a conduit.

Recently, Mass Coastal/Cape Cod Central has installed an expanded and impressive new grade crossing where Route 28 intersects the north end of the Hyannis, Massachusetts yard. Apple to Add Grade Crossings to Maps After Federal Recommendation. Apple will add grade crossings to Apple Maps after a safety recommendation from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Reports The New York Times. The NTSB issued a safety recommendation that Google and other map providers, like Apple, Should add exact locations of more than 200,000-grade crossings to their mapping data. The Federal Railroad Administration has been lobbying Apple and other tech companies to add the data for the past 18 months.

Building the ATSF Metro - Roads, Lots, and Sidewalks

This corner area was originally going to be a small park, but I liked the looks of the 1950′s Dairy Queen building and decided to make this an a drive-in instead.  The first thing that had to be taken care of was the grade crossing that lead to the gravel roadway for the maintenance shops. 

I use the small forms shown in the first photo to create the profile for the grade crossing.  These are easily made from styrene sheets and work great.  Once the forms were in place and the area masked off, Woodland Scenics Smoothit was used to make the blacktop.  It took 3 pours to get it up to the top and completely level.

The last part was in between the rails and paving tape was used as the form for the ends and tape was used to protect the area from plaster.  Once it started to harden, the area was scraped smooth with a pallet knife and grooves cut up against the rails to allow smooth running of the trains.  Although the NMRA wil cringe, I use the HO NMRA gauge to cut the old plaster away.  The plaster is soft and cuts easily and using the gauge ensures I am within specifications.

Painting will not happen until the lot is finished.
