Join a trio of intrepid explorers and ever the dangerous domain of dragons! Written and illustrated by Graeme Base, who famously wrote and did the art for Animalia. Now in the guise of Professor Rowland W. Greasebeam, he recounts the discovery of some of the worlds most fearsome dragons- by a 9th century Viking, a 13th century Chinese girl, and a 19th century Prussian cartographer.

I love the art of Graeme Base and his fantastical and dramatic stories, and this one is surely fantastical AND dramatic. Each character progressed on many an adventure, discovering all sorts of dragons, from Northern European dragons to feathery Asian dragons to deadly tropical dragons. Each story was entertaining and fun to follow, though my only complaint is that the characters felt like caricatures of their cultures.

A favorite book of Saan's is Animalia by Graeme Base. She is unsure when/where/how she got it, but it's beautiful and read a lot by her and Calyx. It was a nice bonding experience, especially as Calyx grew and could appreciate tinier details.

Inktober 2024 - Day 2 - Discovery

I had a go at redrawing some of the dragons from the book 'The Discovery f dragons' by Graeme Base. I love that book when I was young and tracked down a copy later on. It's got your more classical dragons being discovered, but there are some fantastic made up dragons that sort of expanded my ideas on what a dragon could be and started my liking for creature creation in art.
