Summary: Senior year is over, and Lucy has the perfect way to celebrate: tonight, she's going to find Shadow, the mysterious graffiti artist whose work appears all over the city. He's out there somewhere—spraying color, spraying birds and blue sky on the night—and Lucy knows a guy who paints like Shadow is someone she could fall for. Really fall for. Instead, Lucy's stuck at a party with Ed, the guy she's managed to avoid since the most awkward date of her life. But when Ed tells her he knows where to find Shadow, they're suddenly on an all-night search around the city. And what Lucy can't see is the one thing that's right before her eyes.
While I like art, this book might have been too art-focused for me to really enjoy it to its full extent. I don't mean that it was a technical book or difficult to understand, which it wasn't, but the characters felt art so much that I just felt like an uncultured swine half the book because I truly don't get why someone would feel so much just looking at a painted wall. It's not the book, it's me.
About the characters, I had the same problem I have had before in YA contemporary books: the author tried to make them so quirky and original they ended up being almost caricatures. They didn't feel like real, breathing teenagers, they were just names with some (more or less) defined characteristics. But overall, I liked them well enough.
The plot wasn't anything special, but the cute part was that everything happened in a whole night. Everything was kind of rushed but at the same time it wasn't; it's weird to explain but definitely original.
What I truly loved about the book was that it was funny. I don't think the author tried to make it so, but there were moments, or dialogues, that had me laughing out loud. I really enjoyed that, even though the narrative (alternating between Ed and Lucy) was nothing special.
However, there were just too many couples. Het couples, specifically. What are the odds that everybody ends up coupled up in one (1) night? In this book, VERY HIGH.
I think it was a cute and entertaining book, enough to pass the time but definitely not a masterpiece.
The best part: The friendships! Friendship was a really important part of the book and I loved that.
The worst part: So many couples at the same time was tiring.
