Hello and welcome to the first instalment of “Granada Sherlock Holmes actually had the guts to do that” 

(I say first instalment bc I’m always going on about this kind of thing and I’ll probably post more about it in the future) 

Today I will be putting a generous amount of effort into literally one line of the entire ACD Sherlock Holmes canon

The highlighted line there.  Regardless of how ACD meant that line, we all know what it looks like. Adaptations, even if they’re doing an original story that’s not part of the canon, include lines from the canon. But no adaptation has ever included this one even when it would have been appropriate to use it, and none of the adaptations that were doing the actual canon story included it either

None except Granada Sherlock Holmes anyway. 

In the Granada version, Sherlock shouts this line in a way that would make it impossible not to hear, and i don’t know about when it was originally written but  certainly by the late 80s this line would have taken on the meaning we think of when we read it now. I was actually amazed when I watched the episode and he said it. 

(By the way, I know that this probably made no sense but it’s been a hard week and I’m too tired to be coherent)

Hello everyone! Attention!

First, I am not dead, neither is this blog, but it’s also not alive. Why do I make this post in like 4.5 billion years? Because a message hit me in the morning. One of my followers is searching a Holmes/Watson fanfiction they once read, but can’t find anymore. 

After searching the net, I decided to be wise, and ask my followers for help. Maybe one of you knows the fic or the writer or has written this one particular fic, having taken it down. 

I asked the person to give me all the clues they have and it’s not less. So chances are, we, together, can find this fic! So, here it goes:

The story is from Watson's point of view, it's about Christmas time, and Watson is decorating and they have a conversation about how Sherlock hasn't fallen victim to the wonders of Christmas since he was a child. 

In the beginning Watson mentions how their case load has been slow and he thinks Sherlock may be getting bored and he says he needs to try and distract him from his needle. They end up exchanging gifts and Watson gets Sherlock some violin strings and resin for his violin, and Sherlock gets Watson a leather-bound journal and on the first page of it he wrote Watson a heartfelt note about how he valued his companionship over the years.The only characters it features are Sherlock and Watson. Some exact lines from the story (or as exact as I can remember) are 

"The state of tedium was setting in upon him quickly, I would have to find a way to distract him from the needle", "I admit a pause for a moment to admire his fire lit profile", "If you're trying to poison me Watson, you're doing a very poor job of it." 

There's like mild slash at the end, basically Sherlock and Watson's first realizations/admitting they have feelings for each other. I even tried searching by lines in the story but I had even less luck searching that way :(

Anyone? I know how it is to look for a fic, but can’t find it. It’s a moment of despair! If you guys have an idea, please shoot me a message or add a comment/reblog this post.

You know sometimes I think the main problem with BBC Sherlock is the fact that they all genuinely believed their show was (or at least wanted it to be) better than any version of Holmes in the history of ever. Like, better than Doyle better. It’s as if they wanted to outsmart the guy who originally wrote the bloody stories?? Hence the convoluted, nonsensical plot lines where Moriarty controls everyone, apparently

Like I think fundamentally that’s why they get Holmes’s character so wrong - they said to themselves ‘we can make Sherlock so much *better*, ~ cooler ~ more modern’. The result is the complete reduction of his character. he’s significantly more boring as a consequence of his inhuman perfection, he’s excused constantly for treating everyone like dirt, and he lacks any and all of the compassion that he exhibited in the stories.

(And because I can’t help myself comparing, imo this is why shows that actually respect, understand, and like the og stories (*cough* Granada *cough*) do so well! They don’t buy into their own hype, they don’t believe they’re geniuses who can ‘do better’, they’re just trying to do a good version of a beloved character)
