THE HUNTINGTONS AT TOWER ROCK - Diane and the Boys get a riverside view of the geological/historical/supernatural feature known as Tower Rock (also called "The Grand Tower" and "The Devil's Tower"). This mountain of weathered limestone sits as a landmark island in the Mississippi River, across from the Illinois town of Grand Tower and near the small Missouri township of Wittenberg. Rivermen view "The Tower" as a celebratory half-way marker - as well as a dread challenge, as whirlpools generated by the stone obstacle complicates shipping (along with an unexplainable radio interference phenomena). River pirates - that once camped on the nearby "Devil's Ridges" - took advantage of the Tower's influence upon the river, attacking vessels that The Tower had "trapped." Tower Rock was considered to be sacred by local native peoples, and by others as cursed. The town of Grand Tower has a recognized history for strange and bizarre happenings of the supernatural kind: with an abundance of creepy tales from every paranormal realm represented from the span of the centuries. Ghosts, cryptids, UFOs, and other anomalous phenomena/weirdness have all been encountered within view of Tower Rock. Bad luck, and evil acts, also flourish the history of the land around this unique mound of stone - a history as dark and mysterious as The Tower's watery shadow. One of the strangest spots in the country - and well worth a visit - if one likes to "strange travel" and tempt fate by exploring cursed lands. PARANORMAL PHOTO DISSECTION: GRAND TOWER, ILLINOIS - This seemingly nondescript photo belies what is in actuality one of the creepiest paranormal spots around. This is the town of Grand Tower, Illinois - a tiny enclave on the banks of the Mississippi River that was once dubbed "The Unluckiest Town in America." The name Grand Tower comes from a unique (and allegedly supernatural) rock feature located in the river. This section of the river is a marked hazard as riverboat radio operations are known to cease and unpredictable whirlpools are frequent. The location pictured is part of a ridge known as "The Devil's Backbone" and the feature is called "The Devil's Bake Oven." It's cliffs overlook the Mississippi which is left and below. Out of this "bake oven" juts a massive natural gas pipeline that spans the river (the line and support wires are visible). This spot was once an encampment for river pirates that attacked shipping. Amidst the brush and trees on the left are the ruins of a 19th Century house that once stood: it was the home of Esmeralda, a ghost who supposedly leaped to her death over a lost love and still awaits his return. In the brush's clearing can be seen some old tree stumps that, when overgrown, resemble "The Grim Reaper" (streetview to see this strange apparition). From the "Reaper Tree" - looking down from the cliffs - can be seen the Grand Tower Power Plant that was the location of a series of notable UFO sightings in 1973. Just east of the plant, also in 1973, a number of tracks reportedly from a Bigfoot-like creature, known as the Big Muddy Monster, were found by a scout troop. Behind the camera's position, and along the ridge towards the town, there were a number of Indian massacres (and massacres of Indians) that allegedly may have cursed the very ground the town stands on. Strange lights and unknown sounds emanating from the ridge have been reported. All in all, we find a plethora of mystery in this one spot: ghosts, UFOs, cryptids, and curses. THE 1973 GRAND TOWER UFO SIGHTINGS - Grand Tower, Illinois. On March 22nd and April 16th, 1973 a large, doughnut-shaped UFO was observed - by power plant facility managers - to be hovering above Grand Tower’s Central Illinois Power Plant (possibly siphoning off power) before being chased off by American military jets. The Grand Tower sightings happened at the same time as the nearby "Brushy Creek Flap" - which occurred around the Piedmont, Missouri area - and were part of the large sightings wave that was occurring across the nation in 1973.
