It may be some time, but I’ll definitely let people know when I have something in the offing!

I’m actually hoping at some point to start posting something serially online so I can get a Patreon going? I’m still working a lot out on that, but part of the reason I’m doing this meme right now is to see what kind of reaction I get on original work. So, this was a really encouraging ask to get!

When thewitch says “I can make you this spell, but it will cost you yourname,” she doesn't hesitate.

Instead, she says “Which name?”

And the witch smiles. “Most aren't soclever as to ask. For that, I'll let you choose which of your namesyou give me.”

“My child, my child,” says hermother when she brought home the spell, when she heals the littlesister who was close to death. “What did you give up for this?”

“Nothing I didn't choose to give.”

In the streets of the town now, tofriends and shopkeepers alike, she is “Miss Lake.” Her friendsseem confused at first when her name won't come to their tongues,stumble over incoherent syllables, but it's strange how fast theystop trying. “Miss Lake” she becomes, and the formality puts upwalls where before there were none.

Her mother and father call her “mychild” and she sees the panic in their eyes when the name doesn'tcome and doesn't come. She's of their house, of their blood, but witha name comes much more, and they seem confused and begin to lookthrough her. Her little sister, vivacious and laughing again, justcalls her “sister,” and it isn't until her playmates start askingwhy she never says her sister's name that she begins to lookdistressed and cry when her sister holds her.

“Do you regret it, Miss Lake?” thewitch asks.

“Of course I do. Doesn't everyone?”She has a sack on her back. One day, she will walk out of town withit, when everything is too much to bear. “But if I'd given you myfamily name, I would have lost my family and never have even known totake the cure to my sister because I wouldn't have had one. At leastthis way I only lose myself.”

“You're too clever for your owngood,” says the witch, but she doesn't disagree.

It only takes another week for her toleave, and she wants to be angry, but witches ask the price they needand the price that can be paid.

Being a traveler is a relief. No oneasks for more than the name she gives them, and they give her theirfamily names in return, and nobody treats her like they're expectingmore. There's formality between them, but none of them look at herlike she hurts them.

A few times, she tries to name herself,new names, but they seem to buzz through ears like they weren't heardat all.

It's cheating, and she knows it. Shestill tries once in a while.

There's an inn in the forest far fromher home where she runs out of money. “Is there work I can do?”she asks the barmaid, and the barmaid hums and says “We always needsomeone to wash the dishes, love.”

She stays. She didn't mean to ever havea home again, but it's an inn. The only people there every night areher and the barmaid, and the barmaid just smiles when she sees herand calls her “love” until it's almost, almost a name.

“It doesn't bother you that you can'tcall me anything else?” she asks one morning when they're up early,the inn full of guests who will want breakfast.

The barmaid tucks her loose hair behindher ear. “Love,” she says softly, “you don't think you're theonly one who gave something up once, do you?”

None of the people who come to the innknow her name, but they don't know the barmaid's either, both of them“darling” or “dear” or just “another pint” to those whopass through.

She doesn't mind that.

She doesn't have a name, and thinks shechose the harder path, of the names she could have given up, but theharder path led her to someone who smiles at her and knows her, witha name or without one.

She won't see the witch again, but ifshe did, if the witch asked her if she still regrets her choice, shethinks she would say no.

What will things be like for the characters 50 years after the main events.

Enjolras and Grantaire run Sur-Mer, and they have a crop of baby thieves and weirdos who they’re trying to give support to the way Fantine did for R. Grantaire complains about his joints a lot and they’re thinking about leaving the store to some of the more sensible young’uns and moving to the southern coast. Grantaire hasn’t stolen anything in about forty years, and had a second career are a renowned webcomic artist, and Enjolras still prefers his original work to his forgeries.

Gavroche is basically Archie Leach, he’s retired but he’s very much a thief still. Eponine left the life long before, but not before she had a large enough nest egg that she’s spending her retirement living the good life.

Cosette and Marius have a brood of grandkids and take in the kids that Enjolras and Grantaire don’t, the ones who want to get out of the life right now and find new ones. Their former-thief friends help them bankroll this noble endeavour.

Valjean and Fantine met their great-grandchildren before they passed away. Their portraits, some of the only serious original work Grantaire has ever done, still hang behind the counter in Sur-Mer.
