when  summer  rolls  into  hawkins ,    it’s  a  season  of  scraped  knees  &  clear  skies .    weeks  pass  by  in  a  sun - warmed  haze ,    school - aged  kids  free  to  run  wild  until  the  street  lights  came  on  &  it  was  time  to  return  home  for  dinner .    the  road  outside  the  harrington’s  hous  is  wide  &  flat ,   with  traffic  sparse  enough  that  skating  didn’t  get  interrupted  too  frequently .    sam  had  her  roller  blades  and  max  had  finally  regripped  her  board ,    so  the  main  activity  of  the  day  was  practically  already  decided .    max  hadn’t  thought  twice  about  letting  sam  use  her  skateboard :    she’s  not  half  bad  at  it  either ,    and  the  redhead  was  happy  to  give  tips  as  she  paused  to  bandage  a  scrape  on  her  palm .   

the  moment  happened  in  what  seemed  like  slow  motion :     sam  ollied  from  the  road  to  the  sidewalk ,    but  didn’t  have  quite  enough  power  behind  it  to  get  the  board  the  height  it  needed .    worn  out  converse  hit  the  sidewalk ,    and  max’s  sticker - covered  board  slipped  right  into  the  storm  drain .    amusingly  enough  sam  seemed  mortified ,    which  made  the  inconvenience  worth  it :    waving  away  her  offer  of  a  replacement  with  bemusement ,    the  redhead  shook  her  head .   ‘  don’t  worry  about  it .    this  happened  all  the  time  in  california .   don’t  go  anywhere ,    i’m  gonna  need  your  help  in  a  second .  ’

it  hadn’t  rained  for  weeks ,    so  when  max’s  petite  frame  slips  into  the  drain  there’s  little  standing  water .    vans  squelching  atop  the  thin  layer  of  mud  &  sprinkler  runoff ,    the  board  was  retrieved  quickly  and  shoved  through  the  drain  mouth  back  into  the  sunlight .   ‘  okay ,    you  gotta  help  me  up  now .  ’
