On this day in 1955 the Soviet Union tested its first two stage thermonuclear weapon, the RDS-37. It was an air drop test of a half yield device.
On this day in 1953 the Soviet Union tested the RDS-6s thermonuclear explosive device in the Semipalatinsk Test Site, located in modern day Kazakhstan. The test was a partial success, achieving a yield equivalent to 400 kilotons of TNT. Unlike the sausage device of Operation Ivy, the RDS-6s was more readily weaponizable.
However, increasing the yield of the layer cake type design proved difficult, and by the time a megaton device of the type was ready and multi-stage devices had been developed. The multi-stage devices however did use a layer cake (sans explosive lenses) as a secondary.
I really like this video of the RDS-3 being tested (I think it has a really pleasantly clear video of the fireball which somehow manages to show it and cloud formation well, which is uncommon due to how bright the fireball is compared to everything else, and as you can see the adjustments in brightness this seems to imply some change in exposure), but I wish I had the full version.

To my understanding it is the only three stage nuclear bomb ever deployed, though the Soviet Union did test the AN602, also nicknamed the "tsar bomba".
On this day in 1949 the Soviet RDS-1 nuclear explosive device was detonated. It was an implosion type physics package that used a plutonium pit made of material produced in the A-1 reactor. The test site was relatively complicated, with a large number of bunkers, trenches, and buildings designed to simulate Soviet cities, military installations, and infrastructure.
It was the first nuclear test outside of the USA and its colonial posessions. The test ocurred years earlier than was anticipated, and was not intended to be discovered. However, a secret air monitoring program by the US detected traces of radioactive material from the test, which allowed them to identify its location within the USSR.
