Hi, I hope you don't mine my asking, but uh, when I use the wolfeFX makeup, it looks almost like a gray blue? It's the same one you have, I believe, but like -- I apply it and it's very very dark. You've said it's supposed to be dark, but like -goddamn it's darker than the paint I used for my shirt! Thing is, it was just a test, and I didn't actually use the sealer - does that help make it look lighter or something? sorry, I'm rather new to cosplay ;;

No, it's true.  Wolfe FX is a very cold gray, not anywhere near as warm as Mehron or Snazaroo, which makes it look almost blueish on skin.  I like it because it cancels out the warmth of skintones.

I did not find that the gray changed color significantly when sealed in different ways, but Wolfe FX becomes darker when dry than when wet.

Here is what it looks like in a variety of lighting situations on fair/yellow skin tone:

Unsealed/Yellow indoor lighting:

Sealed with Neutral Powder/Indoor yellow lighting:

Sealed with Final Seal/Indoors white light:

Sealed with Neutral Set/Outdoor Urban Nighttime lighting (look at the difference between my dark as fuck makeup and Karkat's much lighter cream-base):

Sealed with Neutral Set/Outdoors diffused light/cloudy:

Sealed with Final Seal/Backlit:

So you can see it is, in fact, a bit bluish and cold, especially in artificial lighting.

However, while it will look extremely dark inside, in direct and diffused white light it turns a nice. light gray color that reflects the light in a very matte way.  Lighter makeups tend to look almost white in similar lighting.

So I'm trying to find gray makeup cream for my cosplay and I realize that there is a halloween store a little bit away from where i live and so i call them up to see if they have the product im looking for. and who should answer? none other than some guy saying "hello, tony's sex shop"

For your Troll cosplays, what kind of grey paint do you use? I'm planing on cosplaying as Gamzee so I won't need to much(using a grey skin body suit for the arms legs a such), I don't know if there's any specific kind? Any suggestions?

In other words, how long do the containers usually last you? 2. Does the setting power prevent it from rubbing and smudging off onto things or do you take other precautions? Do you paint your palms? 3. Does the makeup crack at all over the course of the day? Does it require reapplication to avoid that? Thank you!

Okay I really just need to make a full picture-loaded post about gray makeup I think ahaha.

1) About how much do you use on yourself at one time? In other words, how long do the containers usually last you?

It takes between 1 and 2 layers plus touchups to get myself satisfactorily gray, and since I cosplay Karkat, I only have to do my hands and face.

It’s hard to say ‘how long a container will last’.  RT and I have been sharing cakes for a while since we frequently cosplay trolls at the same time/with the same people; together we’re on our 4th 45-gram cake of Wolf FX since AnimeUSA 2011.  So they last a while!

2) Does the setting power prevent it from rubbing and smudging off onto things or do you take other precautions? Do you paint your palms?

Wolf FX cakes are a water-based makeup, so sweating a lot, no matter how much you set it, will make it wet enough to come back off.  I sweat on my palms a lot, so I frequently lose makeup from my palms.  (I still apply it, however, and am VERY careful about what I touch.)

However, the setting process helps with this a lot.  I recommend Ben Nye Neutral Powder with a Final Seal spray for a last layer of protection.  RT, who does not have sweaty palm problems, never loses makeup from her hands.

3. Does the makeup crack at all over the course of the day? Does it require reapplication to avoid that?

The makeup does not crack at all, actually! It’s more likely to fade/rub off (though you have to work to rub it off, honestly).  If you eat while wearing this makeup it will frequently come off around the mouth and need to be reapplied.  Most touchups I need are because of sweating or fabric rubbing paint off or usual contact points (such as the inside of the elbow).
