this one's from the kiss list, so a kiss you shall have Very few people expected the new empress's plan to work. Such situations were heard of from time to time, of course, among the nobility as well as the lower classes. Rumor had it the queen herself had been involved in such, back in her day. But for it to be openly acknowledged, codified, and not just by nobility but by the purported prophesied god-king-like figurehead herself? People talked. They talked all the more when the co-emperor consorts were seen having a heated discussion one late morning in the marketplace. Several bystanders confirmed the two princes were in strong disagreement over a gift they were choosing for their beloved. One favored a volume of poetry newly translated from Ancient Angorian. The other argued strongly in favor of silken dress, so fine and weightless as to be nearly transparent. They came to no accord, but stormed off in opposite directions. -----

Their argument had been silly; Graydon knew that. He still couldn't help staring daggers across the dinner table at Airk, who was airily pretending he hadn't noticed. Elora didn't seem to notice either, focused as she was on Airk. She looked fascinated by his silly anecdote, laughing right on cue. Damn him and his damnable charm, he thought. How can I compete with that? He always knows just what to say, to make someone smile, or laugh, or, or... Graydon blushed as he remembered earlier in the week, when Airk had said 'you look nice today,' a neutral-enough statement, but the way he said it! He does things with his eyes and mouth and entire stupidly perfect body that, they just, I get so-- He slammed the door on that thought in a hurry. ----- Airk sighed to himself, once Elora's attention was on Graydon, instead. They were discussing magic, again, of course. Always magic, something he could never be a part of. Elora's eyes were sparkling as she and Graydon exchanged a rapid-fire series of ideas, neither one finishing a damned sentence but both seeming to be in perfect understanding of each other. It's so unfair, he thought. It's a whole side of her I can't seem to get to know, but he can see it all the time. He doesn't even have to try to be likable, he just starts nerding out with her and she joins him. How does that even work? His eyes traveled from Elora to Graydon, lingering on his excited expression. He is cute when he nerds out, I guess. Airk rolled his eyes. ----- "Hey, Graydon, hold up." Airk jogged down the hall behind him, trying to catch up. He was making a beeline for the library, off to research whatever he and Elora had been having brain waves about. Graydon stopped, and Airk could see the way his shoulders tightened. He didn't turn around to meet Airk, just... waited. Damn, is he still mad? I've had worse arguments with Kit over what a cloud looks like. Undeterred, he continued forward until he'd passed Graydon, turning around to face him. Looking at him, Airk was reminded of the engagment party way back in the day, when Kit was hanging off his arm and ranting about Princess Taramis. Graydon's face now was an exact match: tight, flat, and closed off. Suddenly unsure, Airk shifted his weight and pushed his hair back from his face. "Um. I just wanted to say sorry, about earlier. It was a really nice dress. I just kind of felt like you wanting to get her something so sexy was, like, horning in on my territory I guess? I know that's dumb." A frown pinched Graydon's brow. "Like you trying to look smart isn't horning in on mine?" Airk's jaw dropped in surprise. "The fuck did you say?" Graydon's eyes widened, and for a moment he looked abashed. Then a strangely intense look came into his eyes. He stepped forward quickly and Airk raised an arm to block the incoming blow... ...Only to squeak with surprise when Graydon grabbed him by the face and kissed him. He was open-mouthed, nearly desperate, hands slipping up into Airk's hair, and Airk melted. He shifted his defending arm down to Graydon's waist, pulling him close and deepening the kiss. Graydon wrapped an arm around Airk's shoulders in return, burrowing in tight against Airk as they explored each other's mouths with many little sighs and moans. ----- After a very long moment, they broke apart. They gazed at each other, both breathing hard, confusion and desire written across their faces even as their hands wandered in lingering caresses. Finally, Airk raised his head, looking up and down the hall. Grabbing Graydon by the arm, he led them off at a rapid pace. Elora leaned back from her scrying mirror and smiled a feline smile. He doesn't say, "while *I* don't love him, I do love you"

He says, "while I don't love him, I do love you"

When Graydon admits to Kit that he wasn't excited about their marriage, he says "you're a very pretty person" in this awkward way (half of what he says is awkward though lol)

Maybe Graydon knows he's queer? Maybe he never even had feelings for a woman before Elora? Maybe (this a stretch but let me have this) Graydon had a little bit of a crush on Airk before the quest?
