So we all know that Ryland Grace is a scientist, he has a phd in molecular biology and stuff. Rocky is an engineer of his own species and is pretty smart on his own.

I like to think that while Grace was positively freaking out over the idea of meeting another intelligent lifeform as it is a scientist's long dream of ever experiencing, Rocky is simply an engineer whose never thought of meeting an intelligent alien in his long eridian life.

He's just the guy who maintains the astrophage fuel and other stuff that requires fixing in the ship. So chances of ever reaching contact with alien life was lower than the Eridian scientists that were on board the Blip-A

Rocky is just one lucky engineer.

reading a phm au fanfic where the other two astronauts, Ilyukhina and Yao, didn't die on the way to another star system so Grace isn't alone on the mission. me being so encapsulated and feeling hopeful by it that i completely forgot that Grace was supposed to be alone on the Mary and that he lost one of his two closest friends from Earth in canon can i just stay on the floor forever?
