X files mini review/analysis 3x08 "Oubliette"

I don't know if I can say i enjoyed this episode, but i do think it was a powerful one, and anytime we dredge up Mulders trauma and the ghost of Samantha is worth noting.

Its also one of those almost normal but still horrific type of episodes sort of like Irresistible, where the bad guy is just a piece of shit kidnapper, but this time we have the supernatural twist of the victims being connected - literally sharing their trauma.

Which is a fascinating concept in general, and as applied to Mulder and Scully, who are at this point gunning for first place in the shared trauma Olympics.

Some things I loved in no particular order:

Mulder showing up on his own at first, immediately prompting me to ask my television, hey where's your girl at? She shows up later at the hospital with him and he implies that he couldn't wait for her before jumping on a plane to catch this case. Which in a kidnapping case is understandable because time is of the essence, but in this case it's also immediately telling us that mulder is already agitated about this kidnapping and the possible connection between the victims. And that on edge feeling never leaves him or us for the whole rest of this episode.

Despite this being a Mulder episode, I love Scully being both his foil and his supporter throughout the ep. She questions his theory to his face but never dismisses him in front of the other agents. She says he's too close to the case because of his sister but then backs his play when he takes Lucy outside instead of arresting her. And of course, she follows him through the woods to find Amy, despite having evidence that points in the opposite direction. Ladies and gentleman, that is a true partner. Well acted and well written.

Love me a chase scene through the woods. That pull focus shot from him leading the charge to her following? Choice.

Back to the argument when she brings up his sister - interesting that he was like you of all people should know that one traumatic event from your childhood doesn't define everything you do - which first of all, it kind of does define everything you do my guy - but I don't see how this applies to her? All her trauma has happened since she started the x files as far as I know. I was actually waiting for him to say something like you of all people should have sympathy for a woman who was kidnapped, and then she would totally shut down and he would regret saying it, but that's not the direction we took. Either way, I both love and hate when they fight, and I think thats how you know they're doing it right.

I think this is the first time we've seen mulder cry since he broke down in his apartment when he thought scully was dying in ep 8 of s2. Poor baby. Will he cry in every episode 8 for the rest of the show, time will tell.

I appreciated the drama of the resuscitation scene but I felt like as a doctor Scully gave up way too quickly on that girl. Then again maybe she knew the girl was already gone when they dragged her from the water. Or she should've been.

The episode could have easily ended with Mulder crying over Lucy's body, but no, we get this little epilogue. Verrrry interesting commentary here. I love that Scully is like I don't know what happened but Mulder you were part of whatever connection they had. You helped save Amy's life just as much as Lucy. For her being so against the possibility of that connection the whole episode, that is so sweet of her and so genuine. And maybe she doesn't believe in the shared trauma connection between these women but she does believe in one Fox Mulder. In short, i love Dana Scully.

But then for him to say that Lucy didn't just want to save Amy, she also wanted to escape her life, her trauma, to finally let go of it all. Wow. Dark as fuck. Someone give that man a hug.

Overall a very solid episode. Scully definitely playing more of a support role to Mulder in this one, but she still has a significant presence and their believer/non-believer dynamic is in full swing and yet they never feel like they're not a unit. Even when they disagree they're still on the same page and the same team and tbh that's what makes them amazing to watch.
