Coates considers herself lucky that she hadn’t seen Thelma & Louise until maybe five years ago. “I'd managed to move through my life without knowing that they die, and so I truly screamed, I couldn't believe that they went over the cliff,” she says. Righting that wrong, 35 years after the film’s 1991 release, wasn’t her intention, but Coates is happy that some viewers see that as the takeaway: “That is so telling that the times have moved on, that that doesn’t feel your only option.”
Woah.

Ok 2026 for kdramas what is going on??
Can this love be translated to kick off the year and I loved it despite a rushed ending. Kim seon ho idc what they say about you I'm always gonna be obsessed.
Then I caught Encounter which is from 2017 but was just added to Netflix. Baby park bo gum and song he kyo?? A 12 year age gap between them and genuinely some of the cutest AND hottest romance ive seen in ages? Like yes maam let that 25 yr old take care of you I love to see it!!! Has that old school drama feel to it without being too over the top, and the full 16 episode order to match, plus just some really great cinematography.
And now I just finished Pro Bono with Jung Kyung ho, which also could have benefitted from another episode or two but still ended pretty well. JKH was excellent, um excuse me that episode 9 twist? Low key wanted him to be the villain haha. Could have done with a little more romance between Dawit and Gippeum, I thought they were magnetic in their scenes together (and the height difference was giving) but it seems like the writers decided halfway through to drop it. Like I didn't even need them to get together just give me a few more Moments you know. Loved that Jung In turned out to be the next villain in the end and she pulled strings of her own from ep 1. And the cases were great and they really went for it on some of these social issues. Was the lawyering accurate? Probably not lol. Do i care? Absolutely not. Gave Leverage vibes because of the whole taking down the rich and powerful thing and this scrappy team of outcasts.
Anyway these are all bangers so far. We're eating good in 2026 -- Is there something in the water??
I know it would kill the whimsy a bit, but it would be interesting to see period dramas frame their heroines marrying for love less as "I think of marriage as a love match in a modern romance way" and more as "since I'm allowed choice, I want to ensure this man will actually respect me as a person for my whole life. I'm entering a contract where he has alarming control of my life, and I want to make sure it's not terrible, even when neither of us is young and hot anymore."
It's not said explicitly in so many words, but this is what Jane Austen was trying to say 250 yeas ago. "Make sure your husband has a good moral education and basic decency before you marry him."
Yup. In a world where you legally can’t get a job without being irrevocably cut off from every relationship you’ve ever known (and the jobs all SUCK to boot), there is no happy ever after without a well-padded purse. True love’s kisses won’t feed you.
Austen’s stories had two intentions: 1. To teach young ladies that no man who truly loves you would ask you to starve for him. 2. To point out to everyone else how awful systems that create situations where people must choose between being fed and being loved are.
That isn’t to say that folks didn’t hope for a life partner they’d love (Who wouldn’t want that?), but it could never be the singular or primary focus. A lady or gentleman determined to marry for love at all costs in a period piece is as anachronistic as a can of Spam.
It’s important to note that every single Austen novel includes at least one marriage made for the wrong reasons to underline just how important it is for the heroine to choose someone who will respect and take care of her.

One of the effect of elementary watson being a woman on sherlock is that hes always making caveats about murder suspects like a man caved his skull in. Or a woman. women can also cave skulls in 👍 he set the building on fire. Or she. I would never imply women cant set building on fire
Ok actually no I have more to say about Can this love be translated?
I LOVE that they are soooo capital A Avoidant and capital A Anxious attachment styles. I don't know that ive seen a drama that has really leaned into that in a realistic and non campy way. This felt like a real depiction of two people on opposite ends of that spectrum slowly making their way to the middle (secure). It's more obvious with Mu Hee because of her trauma and backstory (she is the true main character imo) but Ho Jin goes through just as big of a change in learning to express his feelings instead of keeping everything so close to the chest.
A few small things I love about Ho Jin in no particular order: his absolute insistence that ppl refer to Mu Hee by her actual name and not Do RaMi because she is a PERSON and he insists on that before her acting or her public image. That was the biggest green flag for me. 2, hes quiet without being a pushover. He has presence, he takes up space. Yes hes avoidant in many ways, but he's also very grounded and dedicated to his work. I can only imagine how much Seonho worked on all those languages because they all sounded pretty good to me. 3, he looks damn good in a trench coat and a turtleneck. Jesus.
I Loved the "there are as many languages as there are people" exchange. Beautifully written. And an ahjussi who is wise and gives good advice instead of being stupid or comic relief only, how refreshing
Go Youn Jung really distinguished Mu Hee from Do Ra Mi perfectly but especially in her physical performance. Omg she did this micro eye twitch and then the world's tiniest eyebrow raise in the scene where he ends up paying for the wine. Just incredible, I was clapping.
Funnily enough, Yeon U, who is younger than either Mu Hee or Ho Jin, is probably the most Secure attachment in the show, despite jumping the gun on a proposal lol. But I love that guy and I wish nothing but the best for him.
Overall the concept of language and translation is an excellent concept for a romance as they learn to understand each other. But seriously, "can this love be translated" is so clunky, and something with "love language" is Right There. But maybe thats not a thing in Korea, idk. Edit: it is tho, because its a TXT song!!
And of course, this whole show was a visual feast, from the landscapes to shot comp to color grading to Ho Jin's house omg sir you are NOT selling that house. Anyway the point is, Would i watch it again just for the visuals? Yes I would.
What a great drama to kick off the year!
Kim Seonho tossing things aside (a phone, a pamphlet, etc) to kiss the girl has become my sexuality I fear
CAN THIS LOVE BE TRANSLATED? [EP 1]
(Plot? What plot? I am here for locations and nice shots.)
morning together
Well, look at you, all happy. That’s rare. Do you know what’s rarer? Second chances.
Congratulations to NOAH WYLE on winning the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch in season 1 of THE PITT!
So I don't currently watch The Pitt because I've had a fair bit of medical trauma in my life but I DID watch most of ER back in the day and seeing Noah Wyle go from little baby intern John Carter carrying through that whole show (which in the 2000s felt like a long show bc it actually was jesus i miss those days) and now getting best actor in a drama series for The Pitt as the attending who's seen too much is just 🤌 chefs kiss. You dont get many full circle moments like that in hollywood or tv these days. Congrats to him 👏 👏👏
