Digimon Adventure (1999)
Elemental HERO Great Tornado ———————————————— 1 "Elemental HERO" monster + 1 WIND monster Must be Fusion Summoned and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. If this card is Fusion Summoned: Halve the ATK and DEF of all face-up monsters your opponent currently controls. ———————————————— Can Be Found In: Legendary Collection 2: The Duel Academy Years (LC02-EN010), HERO Strike Structure Deck (SDHS-EN045)
Elemental HERO was the beginning of several improvements arround Fusion Summons, as while they gradually became one of the largest archetypes in the game they made several changes arround Fusion Monsters. On their debut HERO Fusions required specific monsters like many others of their kind back then, with a massive card pool of Fusion Monsters to cover every combination. However, it wasn't until HERO started to introduce more open conditions on their Fusion Summons when they truly began to stand out on such performance, with many future releases replicating their setups to make Fusion Monsters more prevalent and less dependant of very specific materials. While monsters like "Five-Headed Dragon" already had many liberties prior the debut of Elemental HERO, said archetype was what made the biggest changes involving the original Extra Deck monsters.
"Elemental HERO Great Tornado" is a monster capable of severe results on the field by its arrival alone. When Fusion Summoned, "Great Tornado" will halve the stats of every opponent's monster on the field at the moment. A very simple effect, yet with the potential to cause strong comebacks and even finish off the opponent. Although restricted to Fusion Summons, "Great Tornado" can go from weakening a single threat to creating an opening to deal severe damage in battle.
While a HERO Deck has no issues working arround monsters restricted to Fusion Summons, "Great Tornado" suffers from a lack of WIND materials in its archetype to depend on. Elemental HERO only offers "Elemental HERO Avian" if we focus arround Normal Monsters, and "Elemental HERO Stratos" which although capable of preparing the arrival of "Great Tornado" with its searching effect its limited status will make its role as material undependable. However, since the WIND monster can be from outside this archetype, might be recommended to mix HERO along other monsters to assure the summon of "Great Tornado". From "Reborn Tengu" capable of summoning its own copies once retired from the field to "Neo-Spacian Air Hummingbird" if working along Neos support, there are some solid candidates to become dependable materials from early to late game. This is specially the case with "Miracle Fusion", banishing the materials from the Graveyard to assure the summon of "Great Tornado" even when we start running out of options. Finally, "Super Polymerization" is capable of using a HERO and/or WIND monster from the opposite field, not only bringing "Great Tornado" but also potentially taking care of the biggest threats on the field.
With a single yet potentially devastating effect, the results of "Great Tornado" will depend of when is summoned on our field. In some cases its arrival will be needed to take down a powerful enemy in battle, but in others is capable of weaken several monsters to turn the game in our favor. Thanks to "Miracle Fusion" using materials from our Graveyard, is possible to prepare the arrival of other powerful monsters to end with "Great Tornado" setting up and advantageous Battle Phase to deal great damage with their attacks. Similarly, "Great Tornado" alone might suffice to defeat several monsters with the help of "Mask Change", using itself as material to summon a Masked HERO and keep our Battle Phase.
"Elemental HERO Great Tornado" has great potential to lead the game as well to turn the tables, becoming a dangerous monster thanks to the many methods to easily Fusion Summon it. Yet, despite its powerful results in many scenarios, the scarce number of materials in its archetype makes "Great Tornado" not as dependable. With an effect heavily dependant of the situation on the field, we require a solid number of WIND monsters beyond "Elemental HERO Avian" and/or "Elemental HERO Stratos" to assure a perfect timing of its summon. Because of that "Great Tornado" is easily overshadowed by many other HERO Fusions, not only providing similarly effective abilities but also having a solid number of materials to prepare their arrival smoothly. If the number of HEROs from the WIND Attribute increases in the future, "Great Tornado" might have a good chance to become as prevalent as the rest of HEROs.
Personal Rating: B+
+ When Fusion Summoned halves all the stats of every opponent's monster on the field + High damage and/or comeback potential
- Very scarce number of WIND materials to work with - Overshadowed by other HEROs with better options - Efficiency will depend of timing and the opponent's field
